The lifetime body of work of Sam Norkin, American illustrator and caricaturist, the “other Hirschfeld.” Exhibited at the Lincoln Center Performing Arts Library with a 200-work retrospective entitled “Theatre Ink,” Norkin’s great artistic skills are apparent in this Day One of a Three Day auction. It encompasses all of his drawings of theatre, opera, ballet, jazz, and pop music as well as celebrities of film, television, and politics. A listed artist, Sam Norkin’s imaginative drawings first appeared in the pages of the New York Herald Tribune in 1940. About 4000 assignments followed in papers like the New York Daily News, the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Washington Post and the Boston Globe. The Actors Fund and Drama Desk will benefit from proceeds of this auction.
