RABBI DANIEL ROBERTS
(I have excerpted the following from the April 4, 2019 Cleveland Jewish News)
"Rabbi Daniel A. Roberts, who twice has been voted the funniest rabbi in Cleveland, will be honored by Temple Emanu El the weekend of April 12-13 for 50 years of service as a rabbi."
“I take life with a sense of humor, try to instill it in others because you gotta laugh,” he said. “You gotta enjoy life, every moment.”
"For 30 years, from 1972 to 2002, he served as rabbi of Temple Emanu El, then in University Heights near the intersection of Cedar and South Green roads. Though he has a penchant for humor, Roberts tends to tackle serious topics. A scholar of thanatology, he has written two books about death, grieving and loss, and is working on a third. He routinely included a tour of a funeral home as part of the education program for confirmands"
“I’ve tried to live my life being holy and inspiring others to be holy and to choose life,” he said.
"He made social justice a centerpiece of his leadership, taking part in what was called the Interfaith Hospitality Network, which housed homeless families for a week at a time in the temple. Roberts slept at the temple during those stays because night shifts were difficult to fill."
“The highlights of my career would be – part of it would be my menschkeitness – of reaching out to people and being kind,” he said. “I have seven or eight students who have become rabbis.”
"He considered life cycle events as ways to connect with people in important ways, offering premarital counseling and compassion at funerals."
