The superb desk has three side by side interior drawers affixed at the top over the open storage space and string inlay to give the illusion of four false drawers at the front, graduating in size with inverted tear drop escutcheons. A decorative border with an inlaid circular pattern at three sides of the base is an unexpected detail and the chest rests on a shallow bracket base. The sugar desk was designed to be functional and simple (keeping the expensive sugar locked and safe) yet it was often a symbol of the family’s social status. The sugar desks from Kentucky are most desirable among collectors.Mid 20th Century Mahogany Tray Table: A mid 20th century tray table made in mahogany with hinged sides which have cut-out handles and fold down to form an oval table top if desired. The top tray is not attached to the base which has straight reeded legs. Stamped “1075” and “E780” to the under side of the base.Original Oil On Canvas Landscape: An original oil on canvas painting by an unknown artist of a lovely mountain and lake scene at dusk.
