The original owner of this chest was likely Adolphus Smith, who was born in 1814 in New York, moved to Cincinnati in 1838, moved around in Ohio and Indiana for a few years, during which time he married Sarah Bates (1842), finally settling back in Cincinnati. The young couple probably purchased the chest when they were setting up housekeeping in Cincinnati in the early 1840s.

Adolphus worked for John Bates, Sarah's father, who not only owned the National Theater, but also the Exchange Bank. Interestingly, Bates advertised in the 1840 city directory that he wanted to do business with "industrious mechanics." This suggests that he likely purchased most of his furniture from local cabinetmakers.

The chest descended through Adolphus's family--his daughter, Maria, married Andrew Hickenlooper, who was a surveyor and civil engineer, but most notably, he served gallantly in the Civil War, fighting at Shiloh, Vicksburg, and on the Atlanta campaign.

LANDSCAPE VIEW OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA, ATTRIBUTED TO ADRIEN MAYERS (AMERICAN, EARLY 19TH CENTURY).

Fabourg Ste Marie is an area of New Orleans originally laid out in the 18th century as a residential district, but now makes up the modern central business district.

Mayers is a bit of a mystery. A number of his watercolor views of Cincinnati survived (in the collections of the Amon Carter Museum and the Historic New Orleans Collection), yet the documentary evidence points to his residency (or at least death) in New Orleans (his estate was probated there in 1833). Two views sold at the same Paris auction (Ader Picard & Tajan) in February 1987, one of Cincinnati and one of the Mississippi, suggest that the artist may have either moved south from Ohio, or perhaps traveled widely.
