Description & Details

Welcome to the Patton Treetops living estate sale! Treetops has been the beloved home of Ashland's Patton Family for sixty-plus years. As many in Ashland and the region may be aware, Bill was the first full-time employee, general manager, and executive director of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and was an integral part of the festival for 50 years, working alongside Angus Bowmer and Richard Hay to help create the festival and thereby the Ashland that we enjoy today. Shirley's work with the festival as an actress spanned over 30 marvelous years, and she was also a favorite in regional theater outside of OSF. She has also been deeply involved in many community activities, including the Presbyterian Church, Women in Black standing for peace and justice, World Peace Day, she was a founding member of Extended Circle—which, for years, has put on weekly variety shows at various care facilities around the valley, and she was the treasured voice behind JPR's As It Was!

Bill and Shirley met on the day Shirley arrived in Ashland in 1958, but not in the way you may expect. After Shirley was invited to join the festival, she traveled from Portland by bus and was walking up the street with her bags to her new apartment. Bill drove by, and seeing the young woman toiling with her bags, he stopped and apologized for not being able to help her as he was in a rush to deliver a mattress to a new company member. Turns out the mattress was for Shirley! They were quickly smitten, started dating, and married within six months! A couple of years later, they built Treetops on a piece of land up on Terrace Street, in the trees overlooking Ashland and their cherished festival. They and their family, which eventually grew to five, lived many happy years there and welcomed many others—mothers-in-law, exchange students, and friends who just needed a place. When I first met and interviewed Bill and Shirley back in 2007 for the Daily Tidings, I learned how Bill, who initially joined the festival as a lighting technician, would climb the very tall Ponderosa Pine just outside their sunroom every holiday season, and without any formal rigging, would string lights on the Patton Tree for all in the community to enjoy (until one winter, in his 70s, he fell over twenty feet before the limbs stopped him and he didn't mention it but Shirley asked at dinner what his scrapes were all about and his Christmas gift to Shirley after that was hiring it done). (The photo of Bill and Shirley in the photo section of the ad is one I took when I interviewed them in 2007.)

The children grew up and moved away from Treetops and started their own families, and Bill passed in 2011, but Shirley continued warmly welcoming others to live up in the trees overlooking Ashland, including, until very recently, a family of four from Ukraine. Last month, Shirley followed through on a difficult decision to leave Treetops and Ashland and relocated to Portland to be closer to family. (She has ensured the tree tradition will continue despite her move!) While Shirley took numerous cherished items with her, and the family also chose their favorites, many wonderful mementos and treasures remain at Treetops! Also, with the Patton Family's approval, a few items have been added from another local family who loved the festival and whose daughter was with the festival for many years.

Please join us for this special sale! Saturday, September 30th, and Sunday, October 1st, from 10-5. No presales. Cash, Venmo, and major credit cards are accepted. Please read the driving directions carefully, as the driveway is very tricky. We strongly encourage that only those with a handicap permit or buyers collecting large items they've purchased make the trip down the driveway. All other shoppers/visitors are encouraged to park along Terrace above the home. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope to see you at Treetops!
