28640 Shin Gunto Military Sword in Civilian Mounts 20th c. military sword. Showa Era tan stamp (forge location) located above the tang inscription. Nakago (tang) has prominent file markings done in taka no ha (V shape pattern) style. The nagasa (length) of the blade from muni-machi (back notch) to kissaki (tip) is 24 1/2 inches. The width from muni-machi back notch) to ha machi ( edge) is 1 3/16 inches. Naginata (blade) koshi nori (curvature) is medium and culminates in a graceful kissaki (medium point). Blade is in about 85% polish with some smudges, tiny rust spots and scratches. It has a pronounced gunome (irregular temper line) in a midare-komi (wavy fashion) which continues to the kissaki (medium point) There is a small kizu (flaw) at the tip of the point on the ha (edge). Hibaki is copper with a shakudo (gold wash) diagonal file pattern. Old Edo period unmarked iron openwork tsuba engraved with flowers and reeds have both accoutrement holes filled with an unknown substance. There is one brass seppa (spacer). Tsuka (handle) is 8 3/4 inches long. Fushi (handle collar) are kashira (pommel) are ensuite. Both are done with gold shakudo background on a field of tiny blossoms, both pieces are unsigned. Small style same (rayshin grip) has two matching black and shakudo menuki (handle grip decorations). All of this is encased in black tape which is in great condition given its age. There are no mekugi (retaining pins) holding the piece together. Lacquered wood scabbard has a horn button for retaining the sash cord and there is a space for a utensil which is lost to time and given the style of tsuba, was never there. Piece put in civilian mounts. In the absence of military coverings it cannot be ascertained whether this blade saw military service or not. 200 400
