Lane Middleton’s father, grandfather, great grandfather were all direct descendants of the Middleton family. She was related to Arthur Middleton on her father's side. After WWII, Lane's father moved the family to London where he was Director of the English Branch of the Mobile Oil Company for ten years. Lane was about seven or eight at the time. She attended boarding schools in England and Switzerland; Heathfield School in Ascot, England; Riante-Rive in Lausanne, Switzerland; and La Sorbonne in Paris. She spent summers in Summerville, SC with her Middleton grandparents.

Lane was presented to the Queen as a young woman, as was the tradition. She spoke fluent French. In 1959, Lane married Francis Kinsman of Norfolk, England. They lived in England and her husband was stationed in India at one point where her youngest child (John) was born. Lane Middleton’s firstborn son, Blake Kinsman, died in 1983 as an early adult from brain injuries incurred in an accident. Her daughter Emeline Kinsman lived in England her whole life and died in her 50s. Lane is survived by her younger son, John Kinsman, who lives with his family in Bulmark, Sweden. Upon divorcing her husband, Lane returned to the United States in the 1970s. Her parents had already retired and were living in Charleston.

Lane Middleton was a docent for several years at the museum houses run by Historic Charleston Foundation, and she worked for Charleston County from 1985 to 2009, in the Legal Department and the Administrators office.

Lane Middleton died at the age of 84 on November 22, 2022, at her residence in Charleston, SC.
