Description & Details
This house was built by the first mayor of Charleston for his mother-in-law in 1832. It is a plantation summer house. Planters along the Cooper River built summer residences here to get away from the malarial lowlands during the hot months when mosquitoes bred. The houses were not intended to be year round residences, more like a summer camp. They were built on high ground on sandy soils that drained well. Summerville, Eutaville, Russelville, Pineville, Pinopolis, etc. The guesthouse was built in 1895. An old wash house now serves as the garden shed. Pinopolis was a refuge from Charleston during the Civil War.
It is a National Historic Register House.
