BEAUTIFUL PROVENANCE OF THE OWNER:
The journey of a lifetime has led me to a place of change. And a part of that change is letting go of items from a wonderful life. As you the buyers peruse the items that you will see when you visit my home, please know that you are visiting just a little touch of Charleston history.
You will see bell jars that were once housed in the science lab of the High School of Charleston, now, a part of The Medical University of South Carolina. There will be cameras that my father used in World War II, especially, his beloved Graflex camera. You will see china that hosted many a tea party way before my time. There’s a beautiful child’s rocker given to me when I was a child by a lovely old neighbor who once taught my father in elementary school and she entrusted it to my care. That rocker is now over 100 years old.
There are books that also once belonged to that teacher which she also put in my care before I was even 10 years old that are also around or over 100 years old. There are beautiful items all through the house from the canopy bed that was my parent’s bed and often held this little girl when I crawled up the middle right between them. There is silver, china, books and wonderful chairs from at least the turn of the 20th century, and items from a life well-lived.
As I prepare to move to my next life chapter, it is with both sadness and pleasure that I look to share these treasured items with you. I have spent all of my life taking care of these treasures that my family left in my care. I have taken them as far as I can; it is now time to share them with others. So as you study the items and look for their authenticity, remember that all of these items were once housed in a home full of laughter and love. They have stood the test of time and while my family is now gone, when you look at, sit down on or hold an item-to you they are old and beautiful, but for me, they hold wonderful memories.
As I was born and reared in Charleston, SC, the majority of the items that you will see have either been in my family, inherited from a grandmother, an aunt, a grand-aunt, or searched out by my parents who had quite an eye for beauty. Items like the program from the Porgy and Bess opera showed at a very young Gaillard Auditorium which was originally called The Municipal Auditorium are available. The opera was staged as a part of South Carolina’s 300-year-old tricentennial celebration and included an almost totally African-American cast-a most unusual event at that time. I am proud to say that at one of the performances, I had the pleasure of being in the audience. And as I look through the program only a few of the cast members are still with us today.
So, please enjoy the journey of a life, as you look at items that are a part of my story and smile when you see them because each item was loved and brought my family joy.
