Description & Details
The Purple Lady Sonia Young was a beloved member of the Chattanooga community who was passionate about the performing and fine arts. The contents of the stunning mid-century modern/Asian designed home reflect the owners' passion for art, travel, entertaining, and collecting an eclectic array of items from kaleidoscopes and musical snow-globes to libraries of books on Judaism, the arts, literature and American history (notably the Civil War).
This sale includes items collected and stored by three generations. There are hundreds of items.
Furniture, decorative and entertaining pieces and tableware are all mid-century modern circa 1960s-1970s and Asian, and includes pieces by Thomasville, Broyhill and Century American (furniture), tableware: Noritake, Mikasa, Dansk, and Waterford and many purple items gifted to the owners over the years.
Asian elements and pieces are throughout the house (art, sculpture, porcelain). The owners also supported Tennessee and Southern artists.
Rock collectors will appreciate the many geodes, minerals and coral of all sizes and stone lawn furniture and ornaments. There is an entire collection of viny albums from the 1950s-1970s (classical, Broadway, jazz and rock/pop).
Clothing is all vintage (1960s-1980s), mainly but not all purple and one of a kind, from silks, sequins, leather and suede to purple fur coats. Vintage costume jewelry is 1960s-1970s. Much to be shown second weekend.
Practically speaking, there is kitchenware and cooking utensils, lawn tools, linens (purple) and pillows (decorative & purple) and vintage barware, glassware, mugs, every day and special occasion dishes from silverplate to artist- signed pottery. Also includes holiday items and party goods (Christmas, Mardi Gras) and many candles and under $20 gifts.
The Man of the House, Melvin A Young was a USMA (West Point) graduate, a Civil War historian and author of 4 books. He collected Civil War theme artwork and books (Serious inquiries only for his 500+ book library inlcuding many full collections).
Like the owners, this estate sale is one of a kind with many fun finds at all price points.
