This was painted in 1893 by Henry Stull of Boundless, who won the World's Fair Derby in Chicago. Boundless came in 3rd in the Kentucky Derby. Stull's work is very rare for the champion horses he painted.
Henry STULL (1851-1913)
Birth place: Hamilton, Ontario, Canada
Member: Coney Island Jockey Club
Work: Jockey Club, NYC; Univ. Kentucky Art Mus., Lexington
Comments: Eventually a specialist in painting thoroughbred race horses, when Stull came to NYC in 1870 he was intent on a career in acting. He painted stage scenery, and in 1873 joined the staff of Leslie's as an illustrator. In 1876, he was illustrating and cartooning for the horse and sporting publication, The Spirit of the Times. By the late 1870s, he began to focus on painting his speciality, horses. He was most productive between 1890-1910, often visiting the horse farms of Kentucky. Late in his career he traveled to Europe on commission.
