The artist would draw the scene and then a metallurgist would make 3 to 5 or more metal plates that would be etched with a specific color of ink and then pressed onto the paper. For every color in the etching there was a metal plate used to apply the color. The artist would then approve and sign the etching. The technique was developed in the late 1800's..
