Description & Details
· In 1922, The Adro Hotel in LaFollette, Tennessee opened to great fanfare. It advertised clean rooms, elevator, fine dining, as well as accommodations for travelers and business salesmen needing showrooms to display their wares to retail area county merchants. They also had a “Speakeasy” and pool room in the basement that offered a different type of entertainment for both guests and locals. Depending on who was the local law enforcement, they also had a wonderful Art Deco bar with stained glass side panels. By 1930, when The Great Depression hit, the hotel was sold to C. H. & Icie Russell, who renamed it The Russell Hotel. The hotel continued in business until the early 1990s, when it was demolished. Additionally, the Russells purchased and operated The Piedmont Hotel and Shelby Motor Court. All flourishing until I-75 bypassed downtown LaFollette. By the mid 1970s few travelers were staying in old downtown, resulting in a decline to the properties.
In the mid 1930’s, the LaFollette mansion, Glen Oaks, was sold to C. H .& Icie Russell. During the day, Mrs. Russell created a Victorian dream doll house with extensive floral gardens. She never spent a night in Glen Oaks, going every night to stay at the hotel, getting the kitchen ready for breakfast before going home to her beloved Glen Oaks. In the 1980s, Mrs. Russell passed the hotel to her son, finally moving into a nursing facility. The family divided the contents of Glen Oaks amongst themselves, with C. H. Russell Jr. and his wife Allie, moving their share of the LaFollette mansion to their residence.
