Artist Bio: BARBARA SHANNON COX (Oct. 19, 1946-Mar. 24, 2020), a native of Athens, Illinois, was a beloved and highly-regarded artist and art educator whose body of work displays a deeply-rooted interest in the historical and mythological past and often features bold, imaginative renderings of the human figure. She showed interest in art as a child and began painting while in high school. Barbara received a B.A. in Fine Arts from Blackburn College, with subsequent studies at the University of Tennessee Nashville Campus. She was an art teacher with Metro Nashville Schools at Glencliff High School for 34 years. Barbara was honored as the Secondary Art Educator of the Year by the Tennessee Art Education Association in 2002.
AS AN ARTIST, Barbara explored and taught several kinds of visual media including drawing, oil and acrylic painting, printmaking, wheel-thrown and hand-built pottery and sculpture. She was a founding member of the Tennessee Art League and remained active in the organization for nearly 50 years. She was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa international teachers’ sorority for more than 30 years.
WHILE TEACHING Advanced Placement Studio Art at Glencliff HS, Barbara began manipulating digital images as inspiration for numerous portraiture projects. As a self-taught digital photo artist, Barbara sharpened her skills in this medium by restoring hundreds of antique photographs. After retiring from teaching, she continued to paint in acrylics, but grew to prefer digital art. Her work in her later years included fantasy portraiture of her grandchildren juxtaposed with images of nature she had photographed. Her former home in the historic Hillsboro Village-West End Neighborhood provided her an inspiring venue in which to create, experiment and catalog across a wide variety of the visual arts. Caring Transitions of Greater Nashville is honored to assist Barbara’s family in sharing her artistic and personal legacy.
