ESTATE OF POLLY LOU LIVINGSTON
Born May 6, 1929, to M.O. and Pauline Simon, Polly Lou grew up accompanying her father on buying trips to New York City. The family business, M.O. Simon Company, a department store in downtown Victoria, Texas, was a beacon of style and sophistication in South Texas and allowed Polly Lou to meet and mingle with famous designers. In fact, iconic designer Claire McCardell personally made Polly Lou's wedding dress and it is now housed in the permanent fashion collection at the University of Texas at Austin. Polly Lou always had a distinct and creative personal style and in 2014 she was awarded the title of "Best Dressed Woman" by the San Antonio Current. During her interview with the Current, Polly stated, “I was playing dress up before I was born” - this sale being proof positive of her lifelong love of getting all gussied up.
Polly married Bobby Livingston in the 1950's and was a true artist in every sense. She had an intrinsic love of all things beautiful and fit effortlessly into the art world. She recognized and introduced artists from all over Texas and supported their endeavors while starting some of her own. Her love and support for the arts led Polly Lou to launch her (in)famous Art-Tea Parties which quickly became a huge sensation.
In the 1980’s, the Art-Tea Parties morphed into Polly Lou’s grand achievement - Polly Lou’s Parties. Her events were a visual whirlwind of theatrical whimsy with every detail perfectly executed. Polly Lou collaborated with well-known artists Bill Wilhelmi, Ray Chavez, and Kevin and Cindy Jordan (to name a few). At the height of her career, Polly was commissioned to create a Texas-themed party for the Washington Project for the Arts in Washington DC. An old-time, neon-lit saloon with a saw dust covered dance floor was created and it featured well-known Texas artists Bob Wade, Nancy O’Connor, Terry Allen & His Pan Handle Mystery Band and, of course, the reigning Terlingua Chili Cook-off Champion. To complete the Lone Star theme of the evening, the mechanical bull from Gilley’s honky tonk in Pasadena, Texas, rode the train to Washington DC. Among her many accolades, Polly Lou sat on the Dean’s Council of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin and on the Gala Committee for the University of Texas Center for the Performing Arts.
In 2008, American animator, screenwriter, producer and voice actor Penn Ward cast Polly Lou in his Emmy Award winning cartoon series Adventure Time. She played a little green elephant named "Tree Trunk". To say the series was a smash hit is an understatement and the role launched Polly Lou into global pop stardom.
An energy and spirit like Polly Lou’s will forever remain in the hearts of all that have known and loved her as she was a true Texas original and a very fine lady! We are so lucky to have known Polly Lou personally and are so pleased to sharing her estate with all of you!
