Always Caring Estate Sales
Description & Details
We just discovered something really historically cool about the multi-house salel! This is the estate sale of Thomas and Betsy Goodnight. What we did not realize until recently is that Thomas's ancestor Charles Goodnight and his partner Oliver Loving forged the historical Goodnight Loving Trail in 1866 making a 2,000 mile cattle drive from Texas to Wyoming. We also discovered that Larry McMurtry drew heavy inspiration for the book "Lonesome Dove" from the details of this historic cattle drive. Woodrow Call was somewhat modeled after Charles Goodnight and Augustus McRae (Gus) was somewhat inspired by Oliver Loving. Oliver Loving was injured by Indians and later succumbed to his injuries in real life similar to what happened to Gus in the book (and movie). On the Goodnight Loving Trail drive there was also a Black right hand man to Charles Goodnight and trusted cowboy named Bose Ikard. In the book and movie his character was adapted into Joshua Deets. In addition, after talking to Betsy's daughter about this, she shared another interesting detail. Betsy is a descendant of Oliver Loving and that was the connection that got Thomas and Betsy originally talking and later start to date and fall in love and then marry many years ago. She said that Thomas made a sign for Betsy that said "The Goodnight Loving Trail Ends Here" and had it above their door for years. The family kept the sign. This multi-home estate sale is packed. Plenty of interesting history to be found. There are two houses next door to each other. Much of the items are from an old lumber yard/hardware store that closed down about 50 years ago.
