Janice Stanley5/15/23 My husband Gerald and I moved to Saipan, CNMI in 1991 because of my job and where I still live.
Because Gerry was Irish/British citizen at that time it was difficult to find work in Saipan for him and so he started off traveling to Bali, Indonesia and Thailand for art crafts he could export to the US. He eventually started a small store in Saipan. He gradually expanded to furniture and antiques from these countries plus the Philippines.
As an artist and a builder, he appreciated the fine furniture he found in Indonesia and eventually built a factory in Jepara, Java, Indonesia in the mid 1990’s.
Most of the large mahogany and teak furniture was made at my husband Gerald’s furniture factory in Jepara, Java, Indonesia. Furniture in this partIndonesia has been made for many centuries. It isconsidered a cultural craft and so local artisans were contracted to make many items especially the carved pieces.
Gerry also designed pieces especially for his factory. The factory manufactured some pieces; it also quality controlled and finished the items he contracted to local artisans. He sold his items to customers from all over the world.
The wood used in his factory and provided to the artisans is plantation grown and is regulated by the Indonesian government for sustainability.
We also traveled widely in Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, India and Micronesia from 1991 to 2001. Where we purchased many locally crafted items plus some locally made antiques. The items were purchased for ourselves and for my husband’s store in Saipan, CNMI and eventually his warehouse in Ohio.
There also may be items from our 10 years in Maine(1981 – 1991) and our 6 years in Texas (2004 – 2010).
Hope to see you all at this incredible sale!
