Description & Details
We usually don’t get this biographical in the ad, but in this case it will help to
Appreciate the scope of the inventory and collection.
Marilyn held a PhD in molecular biology. She traveled throughout the United States (Santa Fe and Taos especially), Canada, and Mexico as well as to exotic places, including China, India, Africa, and South America.. She bicycled throughout Europe, explored the Amazon, and trekked across the Himalayas in Nepal.
Marilyn was an amazing and award winning watercolor artist and a member of the Visual Art Society of Texas (VAST). She was also a ceramic artist who worked in a style reminiscent of the Cado Indian culture of North Texas
(Most of the above text is lifted from her obituary found here: http://www.dentonrc.com/obituaries-headlines/20140112-marilyn-n.-smith.ece).
She was a skilled craftsman
and early and imaginative re purposer.
She appreciated everything from modernist to folk art to traditional antiques. This house has everything from Roman oil lamps to Dansk flatware, and two outstanding, early, mid-century bedroom suites—one probably late 40’s Heywood Wakefield,
the other a Birdseye maple with custom
knobs & pulls.
She had a huge textile collection, African saturated dye & antique silk Kente cloth pieces, Peruvian, Mexican, and South West rugs, ponchos, & wall hangings.
Most of her own watercolors are located
In the studio building along with works
By friends and listed artists. The highlight of these is a Jimo Buriamoh,
Cubist beadwork portrait. Other signed pieces include a Judy Rhymes (Santa Fe) watercolor, a Robert Redbird (Kiowa) painting, a Jackie D. Tointigh drawing, and a Virginia Stroud (Cherokee-Muscogee Creek) signed print.
There are several cotton Nigerian batiks signed Nike Davies Okundaye, and a batik on paper by Tunde Odunlade. And we have gazillion small souvenirs and mementos from her travels and garage sales.
