This is a sports collector's sale of a lifetime! We are conducting the estate sale / downsizing sale for the widow of college and pro football great E. J. Holub of 1950s Texas Tech / 1960s Dallas Texans and Kansas City Chiefs fame. Mrs. Holub also happens to be the daughter of Jim Parmer of the 1940s-50s Philadelphia Eagles as player / mid-1980s Chicago Bears as scout, and she is the mother of Jeff Ireland, Director of Scouting for the Dallas Cowboys under Bill Parcells, 2008-2013 GM of the Miami Dolphins, and current Vice President and Assistant GM and College Scouting Director with the New Orleans Saints. As you can imagine, the home is FULL of terrific football memorabilia you won't want to miss.
Emil Joseph (E.J.) Holub graduated from Lubbock High School in 1957. At Texas Tech, where he was nicknamed "The Beast," he was Tech's first All-American as a junior in 1959 and again as a senior in 1960. He was #10 in the vote for the Heisman Trophy that year. Also in 1960 he was the first player (of three ever) to have his #55 jersey retired by Texas Tech.
He was a 1960 first round draft pick for the Dallas Texans in the AFL and second round draft pick for the Dallas Cowboys of the NFL.
Holub played linebacker and center for the Dallas Texans and was a member of their AFL championship team in 1962. In 1963 the Texans moved to Kansas City and became the Chiefs, where Holub continued to play linebacker and center. He played on three AFL championship teams--1962 Texans, 1966 and 1969 Chiefs. He was a five-time AFL All Star, selected two-time First Team All-AFL, and five-time Second Team AFL. He is the only professional football player ever to have started on defense in one Super Bowl (linebacker in Super Bowl I, 1966) and started on offense in another (center in Super Bowl IV, 1969). Holub retired in 1971 after one injury too many.
After his pro football career ended, Holub was foreman of the Cross Bell Ranch in Osage County, Oklahoma for 20 years for the Mullendore family, where he worked with cutting horses. He competed in the National Cutting Horse Association and the NCHA NFL Celebrity Cutting Competition. In later years, he worked for Texas Tech as Associate Executive Director of the Red Raider Club, where he promoted and fundraised for all Texas Tech Red Raider athletics. E.J. passed away in September 2019.
During his lifetime Holub was inducted into the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame, Texas Tech Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame, the College Football Hall of Fame, was an inaugural inductee into the SWC Hall of Fame, the All American "Legend" Hall of Fame, received the Big 12 "Legend" Award, was inducted into the Lubbock ISD Hall of Honor, and was an inaugural inductee into the prestigious Texas Tech Ring of Honor. I'm certain I missed a few!
James (Jim) Parmer played for Oklahoma A&M (Oklahoma State University) in the 1940s, winning the Sugar Bowl. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles and played on two world championship teams in the 1940s-50s. When he retired from playing ball with the Eagles, he was hired as a graduate assistant coach at Texas Tech, where he met a promising young player named E.J. Holub. He helped Holub negotiate his professional contract with the Texans. Parmer scouted for the Eagles and later the Washington Redskins, and as scout for the Chicago Bears, he helped build their championship 1985 team. Jim passed away in 2005.
Mrs. Holub proudly says that in her lifetime, there has only been one year that some member of her family was not involved in professional football.
