Description & Details
This estate sale is in a double side-by-side unit at Montebello Condos, on the 14th floor, with a spectacular view up the Potomac River. In the largest of 3 enclosed sunrooms/balconies, you will find a pair of 5' high metal cranes enjoying that view. Imagine how delightful it would be to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner on that balcony, sitting in one of the 4 patio chairs around a glass-topped table and flanked by 6' high artificial plants. Note as well the 5' high English tombstone copy hanging on one wall there, camouflaged by a tall plant.
In this sale you will discover some relatively expensive items, like the antique British "page turner", the yellow Quimper dinnerware, the Wedgwood "Florentine" dinnerware. You will discover genuine Coach leather handbags on a table in the master bedroom as well as a table lamp made out of a book press, a Chinese 19th century cabinet, a pair of heavy cast brass Chinese-style table lamps, a reproduction map of Paris c. 1675, framed as 9 separate panels. You will find about 160 neckties neatly displayed on a reproduction double-size tester bed in the same bedroom as a custom-made black walnut chest-on-chest. The collection of men's cufflinks is on the long dresser in the master bedroom while the women's costume jewelry is on a table there or in one of the 3 display cases that we brought in.
Christmas items overflow 2 tables in the second dining room while 2 more tables in the second living room, with leather sofa and armchair, show off part of a collection of bookends, wood carvings, collectibles. You will enjoy sitting in the armchair on the adjacent sunroom looking at the view, or the metal animals on the floor, the tall white ceramic table lamp in the form of a Chinese male, all surrounding a vintage Caucasian carpet. In fact you will find many rugs of different sizes, colors, and qualities throughout the 2 conjoined condo units.
We have opened boxes to display over 60 pairs of women's and men's shoes on the third sunroom/balcony with overflow in the second bedroom where you will discover an antique cannonball bed fitted with a modern double-size mattress. Take your time to go through the women's and men's clothes that fill 4 closets. Women's clothes are from petite to medium while men's clothes are from medium through XL, to XXL. This sale is a tremendous buying opportunity for men's shirts, women's blouses and dresses, also shoes for both men and women.
You will probably never see a larger collection of French handpainted yellow ("Soleil" pattern) Quimper. We have set a double dropleaf table with 4 place settings and displayed the rest on 2 tables in that same room. We have set the dining table in the first dining room with Wedgwood "Florentine" dinnerware, pewter and crystal goblets, plus a RARE and very attractive "plume" ["feather"] pattern silverplate flatware. We have set a second dining table with another silverplate plattern. This time we have brought in 3 showcases to display much of the fine costume jewelry that we found in the unit, a small collection of antique coins, 8 "bird feather" brooches made of carved and handpainted wood, large pieces of silverplate flatware.
A very important piece in one of the showcases is an antique British newspaper page turner, called a "turning wand". The blade portion features scrimshawed scenes of a fox hunt. The spiral twist handle is sterling, bearing place and date marks for London 1880, made by Thornhill of Bond Street. Such a piece is extremely rare in good condition.
You will find about 30 Asian items of which 3 are antique: small ceramic jar, 2-door cabinet, carved stone stela. The most impressive Chinese item is the 20" diameter cloisonne enamel bowl that you will find sitting in the center of the large square Chinese-style coffee table. A recently polished silverplate tea service sits on a tray on a low oval marquetry tray table between the 2 antique British chairs, while the large handpainted "fish bowl" sits beside the blue upholstered wingchair in the first living room. Note the 2 small framed paintings there. They are genuine paintings, rather hidden in the corners of that room. Be sure to appreciate the expensively goldtone framed G. Harvey limited edition print showing the US Capitol at night.
The 2 kitchens offer you cookware, small electric appliances, assortments of goblets, mugs, serving ware, handpainted storage containers, serving trays. Over 60 cookbooks are shelved beneath the bar in the second kitchen. You will find the bottle uncorker on that kitchen counter as well as a Keurig hot beverage maker.
If you ever wanted a display of leather-bound books, this is the opportunity. We have grouped most of them in the bookcase portion of a reproduction pine secretary bookcase. We decided to put all the bookends together in the second living room. On the white built-in shelves we have grouped other books, DVDs, and CDs. Be sure to open the cabinets underneath because they contain over 600 vintage LPs. Also be sure to bring empty boxes and canvas satchels with you put these and other items n that you will find to carry home.
This sale has far too many categories of items to list here, so you will have to take time to look around for candles, office supplies, knicknacks, and looking at the many framed prints and artwork. We have one painting left by Judy O'Brien. You will see it on the wall as soon as you come in, hanging over a large arrangement of artificial flowers flanked by 2 malachite obelisks. Look forward to enjoying this sale. Currently we are planning another sale in the SAME BUILDING for late August.
