Listed Artist Painting By Cesare Laurenti (1854-1936) Italian - This lovely original circa 1880’s oil on canvas painting by listed artist Cesare Laurenti depicts a warm and tranquil scene of a mother with her infant daughter watching an Italian classic, Punch and Judy marionette show in the interior of their quaint home.  In the background other women and children look on with excitement and amazement as the show begins.  This painting is signed by the artist in the bottom right hand corner and although not titled on the canvas, it was listed in the Soule Art Reference book in 1902 as a modern painting and was titled as Punch and Judy.

Measurements:  Framed it measures 45” x 39” and the sight-view (canvas only area) measures 39” x 28”. Condition:  We have put the painting under a backlight and it didn’t reveal any inpainting or repairs.  There is noticeable surface grime and a yellowed varnish layer.  Reverse of canvas shows some discoloration and a 1.5” x 1.5” oval area near the center that looks like the paint may have bled through a bit and has hardened.  Painting appears to be on the original stretcher, has not been relined and has no holes, repairs or issues other than noted.

Wikipedia Biography: Born 1854, Laurenti moved to Padua at the age of 18 and studied engraving there with the sculptor Luigi Ceccon. He then continued his training in the academic sphere inFlorence, where he arrived in 1876, and in Naples two years later. Having returned to Padua in 1881, he finally settled in Venice. After early works of genre painting, he developed a personal approach aimed at expressing the range of human feelings through intense female figures. The various awards won include the Prince Umberto Prize at the first Milan Triennale in 1891. The new century also saw a change in style, as the artist began treating Symbolist themes and further developed the study of Renaissance art commenced during his Florentine period, now under the influence of Art Nouveau. He took part in the Venice Biennale on a regular basis from 1895 to 1909, with a solo show of his work in 1907. A highly respected decorator and architect, he designed the new fish market at the Rialto, inaugurated in 1908, and produced some of the sculptural elements himself.
