The Legacy of the Town Founders: The Mock & Dunbar Multi-Generational Estate Sale
Step into a rare and captivating piece of southwest Virginia history at the upcoming estate sale of the historic Mock-Dunbar home. Located near Beaver Dam Creek and the Appalachian Trail, this home represents six generations of curated beauty, global adventure, and deep civic roots. The family lineage traces directly back to Henry Mock, the visionary pioneer who founded the town of Damascus in the 1800s and was the great-grandfather of the home's longtime matriarch. The property itself is a monument to local ingenuity; it began its life as a simple, two-room corner post office before being physically moved to this historic lot and expanded by family hands into a beautiful two-bedroom home.
The home’s cherished matriarch, Henrietta Ellen "Ella" Mock Dunbar, was born and raised in the historic Mock House. An adored community pillar, Ella held a Master’s Degree in Piano and Organ Performance from the prestigious Peabody Institute, teaching generations of local youth and playing music for nearly every church in the region. She was also an accomplished painter and master gardener and collector of beautiful things, filling the home with artistic spirit. Her husband, Henry C. Dunbar, an M.I.T.-educated engineer and former merchant marine whose vintage travel trunks, international atlases, and global archives offer a fascinating window into early 20th-century world travel.
The family’s brilliant intellectual and artistic torch was carried gracefully into the modern era by Ella's daughter, Eleanor. After a distinguished career as a professional research bio-chemist, Eleanor returned home to her beloved Damascus roots in the 1980s. She dedicated her retirement to preserving local heritage, serving as the long-time secretary for the county’s historical society.
Eleanor's daughter (one of her two children) achieved a brilliant career as a Capitol Records recording artist, Broadway performer, and highly sought-after session singer across both U.S. coasts and Europe. Now a dedicated vocal coach and teaching artist, her vibrant career is beautifully woven into the offerings of the sale.
Buyers will discover a curated collection, featuring many pieces of china and glassware, Iron mountain stoneware, uranium and milk glass, 100-year-old hand-embroidered linens, a library of antique books, original fine art by none other than Ms. Ellen Mock Dunbar, and rare classical sheet music. The sale also features an expansive LP vinyl collection, spanning from 1900 through the modern recording industry, rare theatrical memorabilia, and professional bi-coastal and European stage wardrobe pieces from a life spent in the international spotlight. Do not miss this exclusive opportunity to own a storied piece of the very family that built the town of Damascus. Take time to browse the photos. There are so many pieces in this lovely sale.
