Prominent Richmond, Virginia family

Mr V was a Collector — we cannot wait to show you this home

Brief history

We are selling the estate of Maynard Pratt Valentine.

Mr V graduated from the Blue Ridge School, where he was a three-sport athlete, a Member of the Honor Council, and a Prefect - the highest level of student leadership a young man can achieve at Blue Ridge. After high school, Pratt had a great interest in the United States Military, which led him to Norwich University, America's oldest private military college, from which he graduated in 1986.

The cornerstone of Pratt's adult life was his long career as a United States Marine. Beginning as an enlisted man, Pratt's career spanned 25 years, concluding with his Honorary Discharge for meritorious service in 2014 with the rank of Master Sergeant. During his service, Pratt had the opportunity to serve in several units, travel the world and meet four American Presidents. In retirement, nothing made Pratt prouder than to wear military regalia to formal events and celebrations, a clear sign of his devotion to his country and his values.

Pratt was a patron of several Marine Corps causes as well as the Blue Ridge School and Norwich University alumni associations. He is also celebrated as a winner of the Blue Ridge School's Alumnus of the Year Award, an honor he shares with just 29 other BRS graduates.

Pratt’s family includes Mann Valentine, who invented Valentine’s Meat Juices to save his ailing wife - In 1870 Richmond resident Mann S. Valentine Jr., brother to sculptor Edward Virginius Valentine, concocted a mixture of egg whites and meat juice that he profitably marketed and sold as a health drink. Mann Valentine died in 1892, leaving his collection, the Wickham House and an endowment of $50,000 for the establishment of a public museum that ultimately opened in 1898. Over time, the Valentine Museum has evolved from a general art and history museum to one focusing on the life and history of Richmond, Virginia.

Pratt’s great great grandfather was Charles Pratt, one of the owners of Standard Oil Company and of Pratt Institute.

Pratt's step-mother, Robin, designed the Virginia is for Lover’s Slogan & was a speech write for Rosalyn Carter.

Pratt loved to collect – throughout the home you will see vintage football jerseys & helmets, militaria, swords, uniforms, hats/helmets, lanterns, clocks, original art, beautiful Persian rugs….

We are excited to begin the process of cataloging and curating his pieces and then allowing you into the home to buy
