Description & Details

Many thanks to Shaheen, Ruth, Martin and Fonville Real Estate for the generous use of some of their photos!

Beautiful 19th Century Home in the heart of Westhampton right off of Three Chopt road.  A jewel in the city it is listed on both the State Historic Landmarks Register and the National Landmarks Register.  The house is full of amazing 19thCentury art and eighteenth and 19thC antiques, many from Virginia and...a charming cottage converted to a gallery with original art...watercolors, oils, gouache and pen and ink art by  William Ludwell Sheppard, (b. Richmond  1833, d. Richmond 1912), and buried in Hollywood Cemetery.  Sheppard was the famed Civil War prolific illustrator who famously drew illustrations of Civil War battle scenes as well as family genre scenes published in Harper's Weekly in the 1860's.  This collection has been in Richmond and passed down through family members for over a century,  Stay tuned for photographs and more information.

Sheppard famously studied painting and sculpting in Paris and New York.  He was a 2nd Lieutenant in the Richmond Howitzers and his work was published, among other places, in Harpers' Weekly and Leslie's illustrated Newspaper.  He sculpted at least three monuments in Richmond...one paying tribute to the Richmond Howitzers at Park and Harrison Street...

And that is not all....A rare yellow pine Windsor chair (see illustrations),  Original oil by Felix Thomas Sharples of Mary Eleanor Richard Mercer Garnet, wife of James Mercer Garnet, and a copy of the original Sharples painting of her husband...James Mercer Garnet, Charming pair of painted Baltimore side chairs, Mid Atlantic Pembroke table  Circa1790-1810,  unsigned oil painting of a bucolic landscape scene likely by Charles Byrd King, 1840 desk and bookcase, wonderful country walnut figured side table, charming perky 19thC splayed table with splayed legs, and all sorts of Canton and several sets of sterling silver....Also....
