Description & Details
This is what we call a "Blue Bootie" sale. Those of you who have been to our sales over the years know that this means that upon entering the house, you may either remove your footware to walk barefoot through the house or put on blue shoe covers that we will provide. This is because the main floor carpeting is wall-to-wall white and the house is exceedingly clean. We have used the owner's Christmas decorations to set up the house for Christmas. You will find one 5' lighted tree, 4 smaller ones, 2 colorful large Christmas wreaths, a few ornaments, Christmas party serving plates, mugs. We will also be playing holiday music on our Bose radio.
This is a relatively large house with not only a large family room but an almost equally large upstairs room that overlooks the family room. The house has a lot of items for you: books, vintage ceramics, quite a variety of furniture, an upright German piano. The dining table and chairs are in fine condition as is the FINE china cabinet. Someone will be lucky to be the first to claim the secretary bookcase in the living room After replacing the interior shelves and the leather writing pad, you will have a splendid piece. When you open the dropfront writing board, you will discover arrangements of small drawers in the Chippendale style.
The writing table in the living room has a mirror back in between two cubbyholes with a light to accent whatever you would like to display there. We have put vintage Chinese bowls there along with candleholders. Take time to look at the variety of items we have assembled on the 4-shelf etagere between the 2 front windows of the living room as well as the Victorian settee in the corner that has been reupholstered in white brocade. Discover 2 small fine handpainted pieces of Herend. Also note the three RARE Wedgwood cobalt pieces and the two small vintage handpainted ceramic items from Quimper, France. On the coffee table in front of the sofa you will see a large FINE Wedgwood jasperware bowl (writeup provided by the owner), plus a large ceramic box designed as a box wrapped for Christmas.
Sit in one of pair of pink brocade-upholstered wing chairs to enjoy seeing the 2 chickadees on branches in the snow of the large painting over the camelback sofa. On the left of the sofa espy the antique Italian nativity scene under glass dome. It is Italian, probably 1870s. First you will see the sheep grazing on the hillside by the shepherd and the small village buildings and churches. Looking down around the bottom of the montage, you will discover the nativity in a grotto. This is a rare antique item in good condition.
We discovered a lot of original paintings of varying themes, done by Marjorie Mentes. She was an accomplished artist, the mother of our present client. You can find a little information about her on-line. Be prepared to spend some money to acquire one or more of her artworks. We counted about 40 of them, some hanging throughout the house, others that we have lined up in several places for you to sort through. We discovered empty frames in the basement. If you carry one of the paintings you like downstairs, perhaps you will be able to match it with a frame.
We have added a second leaf to now large dining table and have set it with French Limoges dinnerware plus clear crystal stemmed fruit cups. Then we added linen napkins and table ware to complete the look. Feel free to open the doors of the FINE china cabinet to select from items there, including individual cups/saucers. Enjoy the small lighted Christmas tree there while you loop up at the wintry print of a 2-story Victorian house in the snow. Somehow, it exudes a warm rather than a cold feeling. On the cabinet underneath it, discover the antique ruby glass font oil lamp. It is a rarity in good condition.
We have brought in 2 showcases to display the good jewelry and small items. One is at the rear windows of the dining room. The other is in the big room just behind the kitchen railing. In these cases you will find a wide variety of items, including vintage Murano glass necklace and earrings, pair of tiny diamond earrings, miniature frog on stone by Herend, polished stone necklaces, a real emerald mounted on a card, brooches and necklaces. We have more coins than ever before to offer you at one time. American coins include silver Kennedy and Franklin halves plus Walking Liberty halves. Foreign coins are from about 12 countries. They are in the display case in the kitchen. We have spent hours examining, weighing, and tagging GOLD jewelry from rings to neck chains. The gold neck chains are in a box NOT out on display. Ask if you wish to see it.
The kitchen is where you will find a large assortment of Christmas and holiday serving ware, plates, mugs, ruby-color tumblers, plus 3 papered cardboard cylinders to hold wine bottles. You will also find new or only slightly used large cookware and a small wine refrigerator. The two upright freezers are in the basement -- easily moved out through the basement sliding door. A Christmas delight you will find in the family room is a Russian balalaika with handpainted scene of a white-bearded sleigh driver in red (Russian Santa) driving a troika. This is just in time for Christmas.
The upstairs has 4 bedrooms, plus a huge work area overlooking the family room. There you will find a lowboy, a TV armoire, small table and lamps, a large computer work station. The bedrooms are varied. On has 1950s-style furnishings plus Hummels and a pair of Hummer bookends. The rare retro item there is the corner writing table plus round swivel chair. You will find clothes in all the bedroom closets, sizes small to medium. Another bedroom has a brass-style headboard, a wall unit of shelves over drawers, a tall dresser, plus a double dropleaf table with demilune leaves. The master bedroom has dark furniture in good condition, a tall artificial plant, a Chinese garden seat, and two Windsor chairs. If you have not yet sat in a Windsor, try it and you will find one of the most comfortable chairs ever invented. Don't forget to walk into the sitting/changing room off the master bedroom. Again, you will find more clothes, books, other items.
The patio table, umbrella, plus 6 side chairs are spending the winter in the basement along with a smaller round glass-top iron table accompanied by 6 side chairs. You can easily change the seat covering on them if you wish. Look for large plant pots, empty picture frames, more artwork/
