At the living estate sale of Margaret Carroll Godwin Frohman. Mrs. Frohman is a native of Suffolk with an impressive family history. Her father was Charles Godwin. Charles and his cousin, Mills Godwin were attorneys who partnered in business. Mills Godwin would later go onto being Virginia's governor twice. First as a Democrat and later as a Republican. Mrs. Frohman has family ties to the Causey, Crump and Flintoff families. She graduated from Suffolk High School. She excelled in art and photography. The Godwin Family is referred to as one of the first families of Virginia.
Her husband, David passed away in 1985. David was the great nephew of Charles Frohman. Charles was from Sandusky, Ohio and later moved to New York City. Charles and his brothers, Daniel, and Gustave created a touring theatre syndicate during in the last part of the 19th century. It was the beginning of the "star system" that Hollywood would adopt later. The Frohman Brothers produced many different theatrical plays in America and London. Later, they would be involved in silent movies. Charles Frohman became their primary business man and he was responsible for signing on such noted actors and actresses as Billie Burke, known to most of us as Glinda, the Good Witch from The Wizard of Oz, Maude Adams, John Drew, Margaret Anglin and Ethel Barrymore.
He is most noted for discovering James Barrie, who wrote the story, "Peter Pan". Charles Frohman brought this magical story to life for the theatre and it has been delighting children for over one hundred years. Walt Disney created an animated movie version of this fairy tale in 1953. Charles Frohman's character has been played by many actors through the years, including Dustin Hoffman in the movie, Finding Neverland and by Kelsey Grammer in the broadway musical of the same name.
In 1915, Charles boarded the ill fated Lusitania, which was torpedoed by a German U Boat. This event would catapult the United States into World War I. There are stories of his heroic attempts along with Alfred Vanderbilt, son of Cornelius Vanderbilt to save the babies left in the nursery. It is reported that they tried to attach them to life vests and then tied them into reed baskets in hopes they would be able to float in the water. But, the waves were too strong. It is also reported that his last statement was, "Why fear death? It is the most beautiful adventure that life gives us" - a paraphrase of a line from Peter Pan.
