Description of sale:  In the heart of Bellevue, long before strip malls, major department stores, and massive highrises, this family designed and built their forever home in 1957.  Age and health issues are now forcing them to move into assisted living where they can receive the care necessary to keep them well.

Shortly after meeting at a USO dance, they married and began raising a family.  Both spent many years in the field of education; he taught at Mercer Island High School and later became principal.  In addition, he started the first alternative high school in the city.  Retiring at 50, he continued in the Naval Reserve as a commissioned officer.

Both shared a love of gardening; he bred Rhododendrons, traveling as far as China to collect seeds.  He was active in various Rhododendron organizations, a member of the Cascade Rhododendron Society and past president of the American Rhododendron Society.  He later became interested in native plants and was an active member in the Washington Native Plant Society.  He operated a wholesale plant business on the property for thirty years.

She enjoyed the fiber arts, including knitting, becoming a skilled weaver, a complicated process that involves warping a loom, as well as the actual weaving process.  She was a member of the Seattle Weaver's Guild.

The couple loved to travel and took the family on several trips to Mexico and Hawaii, to share their enjoyment. Their love of Mexico is evident in the many works of local art that they collected over the years.  Both enjoyed the arts, travel, and gardening, and their extensive book collection also reflects this interest.
