Description of sale:  One of the first homes built in this neighborhood, the family moved here in 1995.  Prior to this, they lived on Mercer Island.  That property was purchased from Louis Lapena, famous for farming tomatoes on the south end of the island.  They had the house designed and built during the Seattle World’s Fair in 1962.  The house and everything in it has been meticulously cared for.  Many items offered in this estate sale were purchased for the Mercer Island home...

“Dad” grew up in Longview, Washington.  His father was one of twelve children.  He moved from Kentucky to Washington to get away from the dangerous coal mining life… to work in the “much safer” logging industry.  During the Korean conflict, dad piloted F-86 Sabre fighters patrolling the Aleutian Islands in Alaska.  After his service, and thanks to the GI bill, he graduated from UW with a degree in industrial design.  He had a great sense of style and was always interested in modern design.  As can be seen by some of the specimen plants in the back yard, he was an avid gardener, working well into his 80s.  (We’ve loved watching things bud out and then bloom!)  He worked as an Industrial Designer until he was 80.  He just really loved work!  Fun fact: he is related to Frank and Jesse James on his mom’s side.

“Mom” grew up on Beacon Hill in Seattle, just below the old hospital overlooking I-90 and I-5.  Her mom’s parents were German immigrants who settled in Seattle in the early 1900s.  Her dad’s family settled in Kirkland in the late 1800s.  She attended Franklin High School and remembers taking the streetcar to school.  Her uncle lived in a house overlooking Boeing, and there were soldiers camped out in his backyard with a view of the factory during WWII.  Her father worked for Todd Shipyards for 50 years.  She attended Linfield College in Oregon.  At 16, she started working at the Sears candy counter at on First Avenue (now Starbucks corporate).  After college, she returned there and was secretary to the area VP, who used to fly his helicopter from Bellevue and land on the roof of the building!  She continued to work as a secretary until the late 1980s.  

Mom and Dad met in 1957 and have been going strong ever since.  They never ever miss an episode of Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, or a Mariners game (especially Mom, who adores the Ms).
