Description & Details

Description of sale:  This home has been such a joy to work in!  The view of Puget Sound is amazing and the beach is less than a mile to the west.  Before the neighboring trees grew tall and more and more houses were built, there was a clear view of the Space Needle!  Watching the cruise ships, ferries and countless sailboats and cruisers come and go certainly is a distraction!  We’re still hoping to see some whales while we’re enjoying our visit here...

The owners grew up in occupied Norway during World War II.  They actually came from two different areas in Norway and didn't know each other until they came to the United States.  He was from a farm in the southern part of Norway; she was from the mountains in the western part of Norway.  She actually grew up in the hotel where some of the Norwegian army stayed.  Later in the war, the Nazis occupied the hotel.

After the war, they came to the United States.  (After so many years of occupation it took Norway quite a long time to get back on her feet.)   He had some family in Washington and she knew people in Seattle.  They actually met at a dance – dances were held quite often at the Norway Center for a fairly large Norwegian population.   Although she planned to be in the United States only for a year or so and then return to Norway... things changed!  They married in Seattle in 1954.  Since traveling to other countries wasn’t as common as it is today and because it was so expensive, her mother was not able to attend her wedding (her father passed when she was only 5).  The first time he ever met his wife’s mother was after their 3 children were born, during a family trip to Norway in 1965.  A 60 year anniversary was celebrated last year!

The home (nearly 4,000 square feet) was built in 1968.  Every weekend he would help his father (who was the contractor) work on building the house.  Children joined in as well, choosing the carpeting and ceiling fixtures, AND selecting the desktop Formica for the built-in desks for their bedrooms!  The children, all adults with their own families now, talk about what it was like growing up in this wonderful neighborhood... lots of other kids, late summer evenings playing kick-the-can from house to house until the final call from their parents to come in for dinner.  Wonderful memories!
