WAUKESHA NAME EXPLAINED:
The consensus opinion among scholars of Wisconsin history is Waukesha—the city and the county—owe their name to some variation of the Chippewa/Ojibwe word “Wau-kee-sha” (or Waukeeshah).
Translated into English, it means "little fox".
Why the powers-that-be opted to name their county in honor of an animal that was being routinely hunted for its precious pelt is not entirely clear. However, Europe’s fast-growing appetite for fur as a fashion accessory ignited a booming Wisconsin fur trader in the 1800’s.
A second school of thought believes that Waukesha does not translate to “ little fox” at all, but instead was the name of a local leader of the Potawatomi nation. The English written translation, it is claimed, came from Potawatomi words of “Waagoshag” or “Wau-tsha.”
Still others believe Waukesha is so named because it straddles the Fox River, a plausible (but never really proven) explanation.
