Inuit kayak, early 20th century
Sold by Items of Value, Inc
This miniature kayak comes to us from an owner who says it was brought back from northwestern Canada around 1910. It is made of animal skin, probably walrus, stretched and sewn over a wood frame, overall approximately 20"l x 4-1/4"w. The middle portion of the interior frame as well as most of the accoutrements are painted red. Accoutrements are a 7-1/4" x 3" sled, 8" harpoon, 5-5/8" single blade paddle, 8-3/4" double paddle. Note two particularly interesting designs in the kayak: (a) hole in front, (b) bracket angle in back. It is also significant that the kayak has no holes or tears in the skin.
