Wall mirrors, French, early 20th century, bronze
Sold by Items of Value, Inc
Offering for sale an identical pair of early 20th century French gilt (?) bronze mirrors, each with an inset beveled glass pane, overall 23"h x 15-7/8"w. The cast metal frame has elaborate detailed pierced work of foliate scrolls. The top middle features a a laurel wreath with two arrow quivers turned into torches flanked by ribbon, over an unmonogrammed oval cartouche flanked by cherubs over a floral garland which continues down over the inner frame of "cross-tied reeds" in the French style and beveled edge of the glass. The bottom middle features a smaller foliate motif. The glass is secured by a brass backing and small screws, accompanied by a wire for hanging. The silvering on both glass panels has deteriorated, showing cloudy sections throughout. There are three solutions to this condition. One is to strip the silvering off and have the glass panel resilvered. A second solution is to strip the silvering off and put a new mirror behind the original glass (far less costly). A third solution is to live with it the way it is, knowing that this condition is characteristic of old mirrors. We would like to sell the two mirrors as a pair, but will consider them individually.
