antique portrait of Zachary Taylor in period frame
Sold by Items of Value, Inc
This portrait of Zachary Taylor as a young man has nearly photographic quality because of the detail plus the artist's success at depicting skin tones and eyes. The portrait is an oil on canvas, 30"h x 25", portraying the subject with black hair and long sideburns, head turned slightly but looking straight at the viewer, with wide eyes and closed mouth, wearing a uniform jacket with orangey goldtone epaulettes and round brass buttons on his jacket, of which 15 are visible beneath the tall white neck collar. The painting has been relined with fiberglass, cleaned and revarnished, the stretcher reinforced with metal bars and set back into a fully restored period molded goldtone frame, 41-1/2"h x 36-1/2"w, having outer foredge band of laurel leaves and berries, medial band of slightly patterned foliage on serpentine vine plus acanthus leaf applied in each corner, inner beaded edge. The gesso pieces of the frame have been reattached and the entirety recolored. An engraved brass tag is mounted in the middle of the bottom member stating "Bvt. Maj. Gen. Zachary Taylor / 1784-1850". Zachary Taylor lived 1784-1850, commanded American forces in the war with Mexico, was twelfth president of the United States, 1849-1850.
