A truly eye-catching pair of Japanese bronze chambersticks with carefully crafted dragon bodies to provide ample holding space between thumb and forefinger. A very high probability that these pieces were crafted during the Meiji period. The supernatural, snarling dragons provide a sense of freedom and ferocity to the sculpture and stand in unique contrast to the underlying lotus floral motif, revered in Japan for its ability to rise from the dirty, murky waters to bloom into a beautiful pure flower. This process symbolizes attaining enlightenment.
