Maxfield Parish prints
Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) was a highly successful American painter and illustrator, best known for his distinctive, saturated colors and idealized, dreamlike fantasy landscapes. He was a leading figure in the golden age of illustration, producing numerous popular magazine covers, book illustrations, and advertising images.
-
Early Life and Education:
Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Parrish's parents, both artists, encouraged his early interest in art. He studied at Haverford College and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and later at the Drexel Institute. His exposure to European art during family travels in his youth also significantly influenced him. -
Artistic Style:
Parrish developed a unique style characterized by meticulous detail, vibrant colors, and a dreamlike, often romantic, quality. He was known for his idealized female figures and fantastical landscapes, often populated by classical or mythological figures. -
Commercial Success:
Parrish achieved great popularity and commercial success, becoming one of the highest-paid commercial artists in the United States. He created illustrations for publications like Harper's Bazaar, Scribner's Magazine, and Collier's Weekly, as well as numerous posters and calendars. His most famous work, Daybreak, is considered one of the most popular art prints of the 20th century. -
Technique:
Parrish's distinctive colors were achieved through a layering technique using glazes and varnishes, which gave his paintings a luminous, vibrant quality. -
Later Life and Legacy:
Parrish's popularity declined somewhat in the late 1930s, but his work experienced a revival in the 1960s and 70s. He continued to paint and work until his death in 1966 at the age of 95. His influence can be seen in various forms of art, including album covers and music videos.
