For our last sale of the year – Again L.A. is honored to have been selected by the Kozawa family to liquidate the contents of their turn of the century Tudor Mansion which shared the grounds with their long established florist business in the Los Feliz/Silver Lake area. This massive estate sale is not to be missed as you will find not only spectacular vintage and antique furnishings and accessories – but over 4 generations of vintage to contemporary treasures and household – and a huge array of vintage florist supplies, accessories, pottery, and glassware! The home is surrounded by several outbuildings and a greenhouse filled with treasures and a large number of wonderful potted plants as well!

The history of Tokio Florist begins in 1929 when Mrs. Yuki Sakai, a widow rearing 5 children on her own opened a flower shop on Los Feliz Boulevard to support her family. The original flower shop was very small but quickly grew due to unique and varied offerings to the affluent neighborhood. The family grew many of the flowers they sold and all family members contributed to the growing business and continued even as adults to work with the family business in many different ways. Tokio Florist's unique and beautiful floral designs soon earned them a strong following among locals and soon the shop was frequented by many celebrities as well!

In 1961, Mrs Sakai, now known as “Mama Tokio” to her regulars, her daughter Sumi and son-in-law Frank Kozawa, purchased the large lot and Tudor Mansion which then sat across from the Original Disney Studios (now Gelson's Market). The huge home featured a equally huge porte-cochère on the side which was promptly outfitted with an art deco era floral cooler and the large front porch was soon closed in to add even more sales space! The Hyperion Avenue Entry soon featured a huge selection of landscaping plants (many of which were grown by the enterprising family) and shoppers had the magical experience of entering through a forest of palms and various potted trees and shrubs and walking the path to the family home where an explosion of fresh and cut flowers awaited their new homes!

Mama Tokio eventually retired handing over the family business to Sumi and Frank. Sumi was well known through the community and her own unique and beautiful floral arrangements brought even more fans to the business. Frank was very creative and designed many of the large floral displays for events the couple created….and reared Bonsai Trees along with many of the larger plants the business sold. The business continued to succeed throughout its many years serving the ever growing and changing neighborhood surrounding it. Frank and Sumi retired in 2006 leaving fond memories of Tokio Florist with so many Angelenos ranging from former John Marshall High School students who purchased prom corsages and boutonnieres to flowers for their first loves and eventual weddings to the many area residents who depended on Sumi and Frank for everything from special event arrangements to landscaping plants for their yards. Both of these wonderful Silver Lake figures have moved on to their next journey and the family invites you to share in the many wonderful treasures and memories that Tokio Florist, Mama Tokio, Sumi, Frank, and the Sakai and Kozawa family have left behind!
