Everything has a number, the items highlighted with yellow were earmarked for the family. However - the family can choose any item they wish. The monies gathered will be used for the continued care of the owner of these objects.

We started at the front of the house and worked our way through so the pieces should be in relative room order. The less valuable pieces start at item #1000 and are at the bottom of the appraisal.

If any family member is interested please text me at (858) 333-1853 with the items you are interested in by number and text me a picture please! I may have missed something - I am trying my best! If 2 family members are interested the same object the item will increase in cost by small increments until it’s decided.

I did not appraise every item. I did not price clothing or small items. Everything will be offered for sale later once all the family has removed what they want.

At the bottom of the group of photographs, there are pictures of items that used to be in the house that we did not find.

Yellow highlight indicates items that were designated by the trustee as being important to the family.

Orange indicates it was appraised for auction at Bonhams.

My apologies if items are duplicated.

The photographs at the very bottom bordered in black were taken by the family earlier in the year. I did not see some of these items when I was there - but was told the Lladros in the lower set of photographs are boxed up.

Many thanks for sending through this gold ground panel. I am stepping in as @Rosalind Spence is currently out of the office.

I think that this painting is most likely a late copy after the larger, original altarpiece by Jaume Cabrera. My feeling is that it is most probably 20th Century in date. As such, I am afraid it is going to fall below our threshold for sale.

This 1721 Madrid printing, in original limp vellum binding, with the “Tabla de los Autores” index and printer’s device (IHS rose mark) is a legitimate antiquarian book — genuinely 300+ years old. The front and rear flyleaves/pastedowns aren’t blank — they’re repurposed pages from an earlier handwritten legal/notarial document, written in period Spanish secretary-hand, discussing things like “Mandamos que los… jueces no sean cohechos… el vino… testimonios… el alcalde” — this reads like an ordinance or legal instrument concerning wine sales, testimonies, notaries, and local magistrates (alcaldes), likely 17th century, predating the printed book. This is a well-documented and collected practice — bookbinders often recycled discarded manuscript pages (often notarial, legal, or liturgical) as binding waste, and these “manuscript waste” fragments are sometimes collected/studied independently of the book itself. $200

NOTES AND OUTSTANDING ACTIONS

Item 91 — flatware service: highest priority

Sterling Silver closed at $58.08 per troy ounce on 27 July 2026, near multi-year highs, which puts sterling melt at roughly $53.70 per troy ounce or $1.73 per gram.

A service for eight with servers typically carries 1,000–1,400 grams of net sterling once stainless knife blades and cement-weighted handles are excluded — $1,700 to $2,400 in metal alone. Both sets are larger.

The Spanish pictures

Item 61 is by Josep Serrasanta (Buenos Aires 1916 – Valldoreix, Barcelona 1998), a Catalan palette-knife painter who won the Grand Prix International de Cannes in 1964 and painted murals at Castelldefels and the domes of Lleida Cathedral. Recorded auction results run from roughly $106 to $1,900, with one example at €3,000. Almost all sold results come from Barcelona houses — Subarna, Sala de Ventas, Setdart, Balclis — so the Spanish market is materially stronger for him than the American one.

Many Serrasanta lots carry condition notes for cracking, flaking and paint detachment. Inspect the surface in raking light before pricing and do not lean the canvas against a mantel edge.

Item 58 is by Vicente Pastor Calpena (Aspe, Alicante 1918 – Madrid 1993), trained at San Fernando in Madrid, a founding-era member of the Agrupación Española de Acuarelistas and one of the leading Spanish watercolourists of his generation. Only dealer asking prices were located, not sold records, so the figure remains an estimate.

Item 59, the unframed domed cityscape, shows the same palette-knife handling as item 61 and should be checked for a signature.

The Capella question

Items 33, 71, 97 and 98 are all signed Capella. Items 97 (1990) and 33 (1973) read clearly as S. Capella. Item 71 (March 1960) appeared to carry a longer first word.

A strong contextual candidate exists in Sebastián Capella Pallarés (Sagunto, Valencia 1927 – San Diego 2013), a Spanish portraitist who taught at the University of San Diego from 1966 and worked from a La Jolla studio from 1970. He has no located auction record. The initial does not match, and the attribution is NOT established.

Item 53 — Settergren baby grand

B.K. Settergren Piano Co., Bluffton, Indiana, a maker of small grands exclusively. Appraisers quote $1,500–$2,500 for comparable examples, but those are private-sale retail figures, not sold results.

The realistic estate sale market for an unrestored pre-war American baby grand of a secondary brand is much weaker; buyers price in $400–600 of moving cost and potential restoration. The figure carried here is $700 and the instrument may sit.

Required: serial number from the plate or soundboard, and confirmation that it plays.

Item 136 — Crown Ducal Snow Glaze

A.G. Richardson & Co., Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent. Pattern numbers in the 4500s date to early 1936, placing Alpine 4625 at approximately 1936–37. There is an active specialist collector base for Crown Ducal snow glaze.

Snow glaze is the body, not the design. The valuable snow glaze pieces are Charlotte Rhead’s tube-lined patterns. Alpine 4625 is factory lithograph-and-band decoration and is NOT a Rhead design.

The teapot and the gravy boat with attached stand are the value drivers. Inspect every rim, the spout, and particularly the angular Deco handles.

Item 122 — the gold-rimmed service is commercial ware

The largest-looking service in the house is 10 Strawberry Street by Monno, Bangladesh — a commercial brand supplying restaurants, hotels, banquet halls and caterers. Four dinner plates sold on eBay at $22; a 100+ piece set was offered at $100.

If any family member is retaining this set in the belief that it is the good china, that is worth correcting.

Items 89 and 107 — glass

The cabinet-top crystal is marked keep for family. Item 107, the American Brilliant Period pitcher, is the strongest single piece of glass found: deep hobstar and pinwheel cutting, c. 1890–1915. Signed examples by Hawkes, Libbey, Dorflinger or Straus roughly double in value, so check the base. ABP prices collapse on damage — run a finger around the rim and handle join.

Items 62, 23 and 94 — confirm before listing

Item 62, the carved limed mantel, is very likely fixed millwork and may not convey. Item 23, the cerused oak grille cabinet, may be built-in. Photograph return edges and check fixings for both.

Item 94, the bargueño, shows pale open-grained wood, softly cut mask carving and applied rather than structural ironwork. It reads as late 19th or early 20th-century Spanish Revival rather than period. The word “antique” should not appear in any listing until the joinery and drawer construction have been examined in person.

Item 6: the rolled flatweaves have not been unrolled, measured or inspected. This is the single largest unpriced risk in the inventory — if any are antique Persian, Turkish or Navajo rather than commercial dhurries, the figure moves by an order of magnitude.

A confirmed headcount is needed for the wrought iron patio chairs at item 1, and marks should be checked on the suite for Salterini, Woodard or Molla.

The library wall holds several hundred volumes not yet catalogued; it needs a dedicated photographic pass at shelf level, close enough to read spines.

Base marks and model numbers are needed for all Lladró-type figurines (items 38–44, 47 and 67); retired-versus-current status is the single largest driver of value in that category.

• Item 217a (coin group): the 1909-S VDB Lincoln cent slot must be physically authenticated before any key-date value is applied. All other coins are common-date, circulated condition.

• Two medical diplomas for Diego Ramirez-Cardenas, MD, and one certificate, are excluded from this report as family-retained items, not for sale.

Marketing observation

Three named Spanish artists, a Galician souvenir, a household inventory headed INVENTORIO and a party list calling for toothpicks “for pinchos” indicate a family that lived in Spain rather than one that collected Spanish objects. Advertising the Spanish provenance should draw a materially different and better-paying audience than a generic listing.
