 ESTATE OF LYLA HAY OWEN

This weekend we are thrilled to offer for sale items from the estate of Lyla Hay Owen of New Orleans! Lyla Owen was known in the community as a lady of the theater, but she was also a playwright, director, author and producer. After six years studying at Columbia University and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in NYC, Lyla returned to New Orleans to appear on the stages of Tulane University, Gallery Circle, and Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre, among others. In addition to her stage appearances, Lyla also appeared in films such as “Hard Time,” Everybody’s All-American” and most notably, “Interview With the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles.”

Lyla also loved teaching. She worked with theater students at Warren Easton, Esperanza and Edward Hynes charter schools. Lyla taught her students improvisational skills she had learned from Chicago’s Second City troupe.

In addition to her performances and teaching, Lyla collaborated with the photographer Owen Murphy Jr. on the 1987 book “Creoles of New Orleans: People of Color.” Copies of this book are available in the sale.

This sale has been a real pleasure to prepare and we’re excited to open the doors of her home and share her interesting collections with the community. Please read through our list of highlights and browse all the photos below. We hope you will join us for this fun sale as we celebrate the life of Lyla Hay Owen!

Please read the Terms and Conditions with important need-to-know information. Please no phone calls or texts. Thanks!
