Description & Details

ROSA PARK ESTATE
OF
THE HONORABLE Honorable  MARTIN L. C. FELDMAN AND MELANIE PULITZER FELDMAN

It is with great honor to announce a remarkable estate sale in the sophisticated Rosa Park home of the Honorable Martin L. C. Feldman (1934-2022) and his wife Melanie Pulitzer Feldman (1938-2002).

Appointed by Ronald Regan in 1983, Martin "Marty" Feldman served as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, and was the second longest serving active federal district judge in the country. Marty moved to New Orleans from Missouri in 1953 to attend Tulane Law. During his tenure at Tulane, Marty met Melanie Pulitzer at a summer party and they married in the late 1950’s.

Marty and Melanie both loved collecting art and were close friends with many of the artists they collected, including Jose Maria Cundin, Auseklis Ozols, John Clemmer, Lin Emery, Jo Ann Greenberg and many others. Marty served on the original board of directors for the Orleans Gallery in the 1960’s, which is reflected in their collection at Rosa Park. Several fine works were bequeathed to the New Orleans Museum of Art, including early works by Ida Kohlmeyer and John Clemmer.

Judge Feldman treasured his time spent in London, and for 27 years taught a summer program for Tulane Law. Feldman was also a devoted reader and cherished his books and daily newspapers. He studied antient history, archeology and language among other interests. His personal library at Rosa Park is filled with an impressive collection of leatherbound sets and rare copies dating back to the 18th c.

Feldman was also very well known for his impeccable style. During his trips to London, Feldman had custom shoes and tailored suits made for him from Henry Poole & Co. We have approximately 50 suits plus some sports coats in this sale as well as dozens of dress shoes.

Melanie Pulitzer Feldman was a talented interior designer and was featured in Architectural Digest. She operated Feldman Interiors from their Rosa Park home and later opened a storefront location. Melanie decorated many Uptown homes in the 1980’s and 90’s and herself collected antiques and fine decorative arts. She and Jo Ann Greenberg were close personal friends, which is reflected in their Rosa Park home with countless Greenberg pieces.

Together, Marty and Melanie loved entertaining friends, artists and colleagues in their home. Every year Melanie would host a fabulous party for everyone in Judge Feldman's office. Justice Antonin Scalia was close personal friends with Judge Feldman and was a frequent guest at Rosa Park.

You are invited to join us for this special sale November 4-5, Saturday, 9am-5pm and Sunday, 10am-3pm (discount day).

We will offer a second sale November 11-12 that will include items not offered in the first sale, including a great selection of sterling silver, fine collectibles and valuables, large collection of china and crystal (the kitchen will be open in the second sale), historical artifacts – presidential and law-related items, Judge Feldman’s personal pen and pocket knife collection, and of course anything unsold from the first sale. Mark your calendars for both weekends!

Update: the attic will be open both weekends! It's staged, priced and ready to go. See highlights below.

Numbers will be passed out at 7am sharp. You may arrive as early as you prefer, but numbers are passed out at 7am for crowd control. You do not need a number to attend our sales, but those who choose to get a number will be admitted numerically. Sale opens at 9am. Expect limited entry when we first open – space is tight. As customers leave, we will let more inside and we will do our best to let customers in as quickly as possible.

Please do not block driveways. We recommend parking on Everett Place and St. Charles.

Front door is the main and only entry – you may not exit through the front door. Checkout and holding area will be in the driveway accessible through the dining room. Access to the carriage house and courtyard is next to checkout. Security will be posted at the front door all weekend.

Holding string tags for a long time is unacceptable. Only pull the string tag for items you are certain to purchase and bring to checkout immediately, otherwise risk the item(s) being re-tagged or sold. Do not pull off yellow stickers. If you can carry an item, you must carry it. We will have holding tables next to checkout.

Please do not remove artwork from the walls or handle sculptures – ask for assistance.

The Lin Emery and Pedro Friedeberg sculptures, as well as other small valuables, will be displayed and overseen in the dining room.

We will not provide moving assistance for large and heavy items. Please be prepared to make moving arrangements. We have a list of recommended movers posted at checkout.

Saturday is priced as marked, Sunday is discount day – expect a lot of mark-down prices. Most of the art, sculpture and Greenberg pottery will be marked down (not half price). Only basic household items and some furniture will be half price. You must come to the sale on Sunday to see what items are discounted and marked. We do not hold items.

Most importantly, have fun! There’s something for everyone at this sale!
