HISTORIC ESPLANADE AVENUE SALE

ESTATE OF RUTH BODENHEIMER – LANAUX MANSION

Saturday, January 25, 9am-5pm
(Numbers passed out at 7am for early bird crowd control)

Sunday, January, 26, 10am-4pm
(Discount Day)

Ruth Bodenheimer first visited the Lanaux Mansion with her father when she was 16 years old. Captivated by its double formal parlors with 15-foot ceilings, she recalled telling her father that “one day she would live in this house”. Ruth purchased the house 30 years later in 1986 and began restoration. Ruth had been fascinated with New Orleans Victoriana long before she purchased the Italianate mansion, built by Charles Andrew Johnson in 1879. She had 13 years of experience working in an auction gallery and did not acquire the Lanaux Mansion empty-handed or without knowledge. It was the start of 30+ year commitment for the fourth owner of the mansion.

Long before the Lanaux Mansion took over Ruth, she had collected Victorian-era furnishings and collectibles. Collecting and dealing in antiques ran through her veins. She would buy and sell antiques at the French Market and remembers many local antiques dealers there from a young age.

This sale includes a lifelong collection of antiques and collectibles from Ruth’s decades of acquiring in and around New Orleans. Also included in this sale are pieces that are original to Charles Andrew Johnson, c. 1879, including his personal Renaissance Revival partner’s desk and chair, two Renaissance Revival mahogany and rosewood bookcases now situated in the dining room, two tin plate warmers, numerous objects recently discovered in the attic and much more.

--

On a personal note, this is one of those marvelous sales that only comes around once in a decade or so - the one's we all wait for. Having grown up around antiques and old houses, I was truly in my element in this house re-arranging and staging vignettes. It was a real pleasure working with Ruth's collection she so passionately collected in her lifetime. Her energy can be felt in every corner of the house and I give her credit for how well the house turned out. Special thanks to everyone who assisted in the quick turnaround of this 10,000 sq. ft. mansion. Thank you Mark G., Laura, Della, Stacy, Barbara, Mark C., Ricky and the crew. You are all priceless!

We hope you, our devoted followers and others, will join us for this most special sale in the Faubourg Marigny. - Jonathan
