Featuring an international influence, a collection amassed by a Chinese diplomat, from traditional scrolls, to ink on paper to porcelain this collection is worth the translation.
Chinese scroll by Chen Hongshou, 陈鸿寿. The text in Chinese: 於是天下学士,靡然向风,人识廉隅,家知礼让,教臻侍子,化洽期门,区宇?安,方面静息. This passage conveys a sense of societal transformation where integrity, propriety, and education lead to a peaceful and harmonious environment.
Chinese Calligraphy Scroll Couplet written by Guo Songtao (郭嵩焘, 1818–1891) a native of Xiangyin in Hunan province, and a prominent Chinese diplomat, scholar, and writer during the late Qing Dynasty. He is best known for being one of the first Chinese officials to travel abroad and for his contributions to Chinese diplomacy in the 19th century, and for his painting and calligraphy, especially running script. The couplet is from two Tang Dynasty poems, by two poets. At right, "Moss grows on the three paths, bathed in white dew", and left reads, "The moonlight and the sound of the river are shared by one building".
Calligraphy by Tan Yankai 譚延闓 (1880-1930), a famous Chinese politician and calligrapher.
Peacock with Open Feathers, Ink on Paper, by Zhang Shuqi 張書旂 (1900-1957). Dated 1940. Zhang’s work has been collected by President Roosevelt. In 1935, Zhang held a solo exhibition in Nanjing, with over 200 of his works sold out, His works were subsequently exhibited in France, Germany, the Soviet Union, Belgium, and other countries, and collected by numerous national museums, including Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Two Men at Base of Mountain Scene, Ink on Paper by Pu Ru 溥儒 (Chinese, 1896-1963), a renowned Chinese artist.
Additional art spans from Robert Motherwell, to an antique carousel horse, to period advertising for Sweet-Orr Workwear, where six men taking part in a tug of war demonstrated the strength their overalls, drawn by Herbert Meyer.
