Thomas Sharp was a woodworker and clockmaker in Shakespeare's hometown of Stratford-upon-Avon. History says the 18th century owner of Shakespeare's New Place home cut down the Bard's black mulberry tree in frustration due to all the tourists visiting the property. The wood from the felled tree was used by Thomas Sharp and other locals to create "memento mori" or early souvenir pieces for trade.
