MATA ORTIZ POTTERY PIECES - signed by Juan Quezada, Olga Quezada, Noe Quezada and Beto Enriquez
Juan Quezada Celado was a Mexican potter from a poor rural town in Chihuahua. Quezada discovered and studied pre Hispanic pottery of the Mimbres and Casas Grandes cultures. He eventually worked out how the pots were made with no help from ceramicists or specialists in these cultures. His re-interpretation of Casas Grandes pottery is known as Mata Ortiz pottery. The potters of Mata Ortiz create contemporary works of art, often incorporating these Mimbres designs shared by the Southwest, Native American cultures.
Mata Ortiz Pottery, is one of the most innovative ceramics in the world. Led by Juan Quezada (1940-2022), the entire pueblo of Mata Ortiz creates outstanding handmade coiled pots or ollas, following centuries old methods, and without the use of a potter's wheel. The shaping and polishing of the clay to the hand painted designs is entirely done by hand. Each pot is hand painted with a human hair brush, made from children's hair. These brushes are designed to paint very fine lines and intricate designs. All of the materials and tools originate from supplies available locally. The fuel for the low temp firing is grass-fed cow manure or split wood. Each characteristic comes from an ancient pottery tradition.
KACHINA DOLLS - more than mere artifacts, they are profound spiritual symbols in Native American culture. These dolls serve as a tangible connection to the spiritual world, acting as intermediaries between humans and the spirits they represent. They are revered as spiritual messengers, each uniquely representing elements of life, nature, and ancestral wisdom.
These carvings follow the style of the original "Hopi Katsina Dolls" symbolizing various aspects of their worldview - Spiritual Guardians, Seasonal Cycles, and Teaching Tools. Traditionally carved using a single piece of cottonwood root, the Navajo began carving in their own creative way, adding leather, feather, beads and turquoise.
Kachina Dolls are gifts given in hope of future abundance and health, as well as tools for education. There are more than 250 different Kachinas, each with its own separate attributes, representing everything from animals to abstract concepts.
The Kachina Dolls of today's art market are a bridge not only between the spiritual world and mortals but also between Hopis and non-Hopis. Each year Kachinas come, they walk upon the earth and they dance to bring life and renewal. When the Kachinas return to the spirit world at the end of the planting, they return with prayers of the Hopi that we might all continue on this earth for another round in the circle of life.
