An antique male Chiwara statue complete with base made by the Bambara people who reside in present day Mali. A Chiwara is a composite animal of an antelope, aardvark, and pangolin. The Chiwara is held for the persons who are the best and fastest workers of the land, and it is passed from one person to another depending on skill and expertise. It is a high honor to be able to wear the mask and dance the ceremonial Chiwara dance.

In Yoruba culture twins are considered sacred, and when a twin passes away an ère ìbejì is made to ensure the living sibling does not follow his or her sibling into death. The figures are washed, fed, and clothed just as if living until the mother passes away. Displayed in gorgeous glass case with a mirrored bottom and wood base.
