Hey, Whose Bright Idea Was It To Change EstateSales.NET?

Oh boy, Oh boy!

As you may have noticed, our site looks a little different today.  We've been working on improving our site over the past few months (eight actually).  In the early days of EstateSales.NET, it used to be just me making changes to the site here and there trying to improve it.  Over the past three years, we've hired some really talented programmers that have taken the site to a new level in terms of functionality and performance.  I couldn't be more proud of our team and the job they've done.

I hope you like what we've changed.  I know what we had worked, but it was slowly becoming a poor experience for a certain group of people: people with smart phones and tablets.  Apparently those things are here to stay!  The amount of people viewing our site via a phone or tablet has skyrocketed over the last year or so.  You could use the old site with mobile devices, but it was not a good experience.  Something had to be done.

We set out to redesign the site so it could be used by anyone (whether that is someone at home on a desktop or someone on the go with an iPhone or Android phone).  More and more companies are buying iPads and other tablets to list their sales.  We wanted that to work flawlessly.  I know there are those that will say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it."  The problem is that as time goes on, it would have been more and more "broke."

There will be issues (hopefully only small ones).  We've been testing like crazy for months, but there are probably things we overlooked.  I hope not, but I'm realistic.  If you see something that doesn't look right, please let us know.  We'll get it fixed.

Here's a video we recorded that goes through some of the things we changed and why.  Do you love it?  Do you hate it?  Let us know in the comments or contact us privately to let us know.  Either way is fine.

I was far to quick to judge the new software. When I first ran it, the program was pretty sad. Seems that it needed a little burn in time. As it turns out, very nice. Sorry for the knee jerk reaction. The time and distance feature has returned after a couple of runs. Suggested feature: when using the map to look up sales, save the map as "last viewed". Currently have to start over with map after "page back"

On my iPad the site used to show sales and their distance from my actual location. It no longer does that and is very useful.

Hi Chris: Are you not able to see the map on the sale listing, or the city page? Hi Susan: Not sure I understand. When you are viewing the city page with all upcoming sales, you should be able to see those sales that are upcoming. Are you talking about the city page, or the email notifications?

Katie, Just checked, and it looks like the developers have started. The distance is now appearing, looks like they just need to add the sort function to the code.

I'll make sure that the developers know that it's an important feature for you, as well as others. I'll see what I can do.

Katie, I don't actually want to filter out anything, i want just what i used to have: sales sorting by distance from me. I'm disappointed in the lack of thought that seems to have gone into this change. You get advertisers because buyers appreciate the info. Now, i'm planning to take a couple of weeks off, in the hopes that you'll restore the functionality you used to have. The loss of the feature i miss is really surprising, as every retail website has a "locations" button featured prominently. If your customers can't find you, you have no business. I hope you resolve this quickly.

Site looks great and I like being able to check when a sale was last updated. One thing maybe you could add would be a header for the local sales--you have the bold blue header for Featured Sales, but no header for the local sales. For instance--go to Indiana, angola--there is only one ACTUAL local sale, but shoppers are scrolling past it thinking it is a part of the map/info area. I have had 2 buyers email me that my listing is not there only to have to tell them to look immediately below the map and not get pulled past it with the bold blue header.... Thanks!

I do not like the new program. In the old one I could see if there were photos before clicking on and I didn't have to go through so much junk at the top. Any chance we can go back or at least compromise?

I've been an advertiser with you guys since 2007 & have been amazed by your phenomenal growth. Today, however, I am so grateful for the 4,000 names on my own mailing list. Whether you maintain a website or produce an estate sale, you arrange & simplify things to MAKE IT EASY on your customer; you all have complicated things unnecessarily.

Hi Paul: Hmmm, when you choose a metro area, it should default to only local sale. At that time, if you want to see more, you can view the surrounding sales by clicking the link below the map legend. If you don't mind, could you send an email to support@EstateSales.NET with your browser details? Here is where you can access that information: http://www.estatesales.net/browser/details.aspx Thank you and we look forward to figuring out what the issue might be.

I use your site only on my laptop. The new changes have some strange things. When I choose a state and then a city, the site only gives me sales outside the city area. Then every time I have to go into filters and enter to get only sales for the city. The changes make use of site much slower. While mobile is here to stay, it does not make sense for you make a computer user to work as slow as a phone. By the way, I will never setup an account, I don't want your emails.

Hi Deb: The geolocation will provide sales around your current location, but it would probably be good to use the filtering options to narrow in on specific sales you want to see. Is that the main problem for you? Seeing far too many sales using the geolocation? Hi Linda: I'm sorry to hear that. The search feature should be working just fine, are you running into trouble?
Linda

"Geolocation" provides too much data in northern NJ. It's ironic, that this change is causing the most distress where you're most successful.
Katie Britt (EstateSales.NET Administrator)

Hi Deb: Sorry for the inconvenience this has caused. The developers are currently working on adding back features that needed to be removed, due to performance issues. Have you been able to use the geolocation tool so that you're provided sales based on your current location?
Deb
I used the mobile version 90% of the time. Now, it seems that there is only one version, and they've not included the features allowing me to "click on your current location" to get a list of sales, sorted by distance, with that distance clearly stated. I need this list in order to buy efficiently. I need it to be constantly updatable as i drive around. How ironic is it that, in the quest to update to support mobile devices, i'm in much worse shape on my iphone than i was before? In Northern New Jersey especially, with the abundance of sales, restoring this feature is key. Secondarily, the old thumbnails were much more useful than constantly swirling pinwheels. Also, i'd appreciate a look where i can quickly and easily see who's running the sale. That was well-done before, now it's less visible. Given a large volume of choices, that is one of my filters to maximize my time. I know updates have to happen, but this one feels like the web people hired were told to "update us" without sufficient care given to preserving what the buyers need. Really, Pinterest is what we all desperately were waiting for? Me, not so much.

Hi Leslie: We've been improving a lot over the last week, based on feedback. Not sure what you're referencing about "free" customers. Anyone who lists a sale on the site, is paying for that listing. The sales are still ordered by date/time on the city page. If you could, send an email to support@EstateSales.NET and we can answer all of your questions.

I have had a lot of complaints from shoppers about the updates. I know it hurt my business last week. I get updates on my phone for other conducted estate sales..Michigan yesterday Ohio today.. I am in Chicago. I was upset to hear that free customers get to have the sales listed above paying customers. I think you are great company but I don't get leads from your site for sales...only shoppers...and if the shoppers cant get the info it hurts me. Hope it is fixed soon. Hi Terry: Sorry, but I don't think you're viewing the correct site. We don't have ads when signed into your account. There is one ad, but it would only be found on the metro page. We do not inundate with ads because that's something that even we don't like.
Terry

There is nothing improved about it. The list of sales is harder to see pertinent information (like the seller or location). It is no better on my smartphone than it was before. Throw the damn slide show crap away and let me look at pics the way I want to. Still some sort of glitch every time I go to the site. My filters are not being used very often. Do you really need to add ads? Is there a real reason for wanting someone to have an 'account' just to look at ads?

While the visual design is a bit cleaner, I find I've lost a lot of functionality. I use the site primarily on a mobile device. The results are no longer sorting in order of distance and the filtering does not seem to give any change in results. Frankly, this past weekend the site was nearly useless for me. Also, I was a fan of the smaller thumbnail images as a preview to the gallery–this new setup loads slow and isn't as easy to quickly visually scan. Warts and all, I loved how the old site functioned.

We've updated the EstateSales.NET site with several improvements over last week. Here is what we've added: 1. Filtering on the city page now works again. You can do zip code searches. You can filter on the sale types you want. You can do a distance search for sales happening in the next three days if you want. You can get as specific as you want. It'll even remember your settings for when you come back to the site next. 2. We had added the ability to click anywhere in the row to view the sale details on the city page. It actually turned out to be pretty annoying. We've turned it off for everyone except mobile. That's how it was supposed to be anyway. 3. Lots of little improvements here and there. 4. And last, but certainly not least, we made performance improvements. This should help the site perform better when all you folks start hammering the site. Did you know there are over 1.3 million visitors to our site each month? Yep. We've tripled our server capacity over the last week. If there are problems with performance again this week, we have contingency plans in place. Thanks for hanging in there with us! We will probably have updates to the site every day this week. If you see something you don't like or think could be better, please let us know by contacting support@EstateSales.NET

Two thoughts about viewing sale pages: 1) When I'm viewing enlarged photos, the forward arrow disappears after 2 or 3 photos. I must close the window and re-open at the next photo, only to have it happen again a couple of photos later. Is this an issue with others? 2) As an estate sale company, I don't care for the "Find More Sales" at the bottom of our sale pages. I would prefer "Find More Sales from this Company" since I consider the page mine. Its value is limited anyway. In my area, for example, if you click "Find Sales near 60641" you get the exact same results as the next line, "Find sales in the Chicago area."

something I find inconvenient-with the old system, when I scrolled down the main list and then opened the the specifice sale, I would the pix and then hit the back button and the screen would return to the main list page at precisely the spot of the sale I had just opened. That site would then be highlighted and would always know I had looked at it and it was a help if I saw something that interested me, I could then go back and find it (because I hadn't written it down) by going to the highlighted sites I had previously opened. Now when I hit the back button the screen go to the top of the list, and I have to cursor down to figure out where I had left off, and the site I last viewed isn't even highlighted. It does also seem slower and the arrows on the pix seem to require extra clicks to get it to respond.

Don't really like the new site very well. I have worked in IT for 20 years, I understand the need for new capabilities on a site up date, but I think you missed the mark in several areas. i.e. Reviewing photos, way too slow& and most importantly what happened to setting a location and it would provide a list of everything in the area . Plus I could change my zip code on the fly and see just what sales were close to where I was. Taking that feature away is a HUGE MISTAKE!!!!!
AC
You call this an improvement? 1. Most importantly...the site doesn't work. 2. It was nice and streamlined before: type in the zip and away you go. Not now. 3. The zip box (the search box) should be the most prominently displayed feature, not reduced in size and shoved into the upper right.

Having to log in every time is not helpful....I put in for sales within 20 miles of my zip code and I get sales in Indiana and Wisconsin !!!??? Why do people incharge of these thing mess with a good thing. The site is a complete joke. I was at an estate sale yesterday with just a few other people there. The owners of the house said they were upset with limited exposure this site now provides. Just leave well enough alone. Just like ebay, I wonder if the brains that run these outfits use these web sites in the real world. If they did they would know to leave well enough alone.

I have a listing account and I'm noticing a couple of problems. 1.) I published an ad yesterday and this morning, the "Views" still show "0" - I know I've had at least one view, because I received a message about one of the items. 2.) Icons are not being displayed. They are showing up as "character codes" such as FO/44 (Edit button). I'm also noticing this on the ads, to the left of the header, address, phone, etc. [this also includes your social media icons at the bottom of the page.

Hey, what gives with the map. I loved that view where I could zoom in to a particular area and click on the flag, then click on the detail link to see all the info on the sale. I have to agree -- "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". The new "improved" site is far from improved. Takes too long to load and, even with re-setting the filter every time (what a pain!), I still get sales that are too far away. Someone needs to step up, admit it's all a mistake, and put it back the way it was....which was great, BTW.

Keep getting spurious messages such as: "You do not have permission to view this directory or page." For example, one situation where I keep getting this is after viewing a Specific SALE webpage (reached from the CITY list of sales webpage), going BACK to the CITY page gives the specified message. RELOADing the CITY page works but it is aggravating. But then sometimes RELOAD doesn't work (cache related?) so I go BACK to the STATE list of CITIES - again erratic behavior (irritating but better than the server "freezing" or crashing).
Bob F.

When I first saw the "new" website, I immediately did not like the FONT/TYPEFACE (minor issue if the SITE WORKS). However, here towards the end of the week (estate sales BUSY time of the week) the "new" website is PERFORMING POORLY - SLOOOOOOOOOOOW, UNRESPONSIVE. OH... now while I was drafting this comment, someone must have TUNED the server settings to something like they ought to be - server is now more responsive - hopefully it stays that way. I think major website CHANGES should be REAL-WORLD tested (by prospective estate sale BUYERS - not sure how to get estate sale companies listing with your website to "test") on a separate (but similar) server mirrored with the same estate sale "data". Exactly how it is done is not the point, but, having a STABLE, website ("old" version) mirrored with the same "data" (as "new" version) as a BACKUP or ALTERNATE website would be desirable.

I agree with most comments here - these "improvements" are anything but. A classic example of "if it aint broke, don't fix it." I would respectfully suggest that you roll back to the old version (which was great, by the way), and then slowly add a few new features at a time, making sure each works before trying the next. I was at a couple of sales this morning, and this web site was discussed. No one liked it better than before, and many hated it, even the people doing the sales. I guess it doesn't help to have your site down on the busiest day for esate sales of the week.

Hi Andrew: I'll make sure to get this feedback over to the developers so that we can do something to fix it for you. Hi Lynn: Glad to hear it, Lynn! Hi Ali: After a lot of feedback yesterday about the filtering of sales, the developers are working on making local sales the default setting, with the option to view other sales available. We'll have it in place sometime today! Hi MB: I'll make sure to get this info over to our developers so we can see what we can do to fix it! Hi Melody: Based on the address of the sale you post, it will be added to all metro areas within a 100 mile radius. The developers are currently working on making a link available so you can see all the metro areas that your sale will be located in. Hopefully, we'll have it in place before the week ends.

Before when I opening a sale to look at, it would change color when I went back to look for other sales. It was great because I knew that I looked at that sale already and I could move on to other sales. Now this feature is gone and I end up opening up sales multiple times that I already looked at and wasting time. Disappointing update and a step back.

I dont like that there is now a limit of how many characters than can be used in the "terms and conditions" section, and it wont allow me to double space or use columns. I went to do a simple edit, and now my ad looks all jumbled, and hard to read, which can cause much legal issues come auction day. My ad was clear and concise, now it is confusing. Also, I dont like how the pictures are a good distance down on the bottom of the page, many users I feel will not even notice the pictures, because they are easily missed. If you didnt know to scroll down to find them, you would never see them. Overall, I like the changes, and will learn to live with them. I am just very dissatisfied with the terms and conditions section....There is not enough room to put all the legal stuff I have to put in my ads as required by law..... :(

This is a total disappointment. You need to work on the filter I'm getting sales all the way to Georgia and far off places I don't intend to go. And I need the full screen picture like I was getting in the old mobile format. I don't care for Pinterest I'm sorry but I hate this new format. One thing I like is you update when sellers post new pictures within a certain timeframe :)

Hi Diane, I'm sorry you don't like it. We were having problems with the site after releasing it this morning. It should be much speedier now. As for the number of sales on a page, we will make that better. You might try using the filtering options on the sale page in the mean time. Just let me know.

Hi Patti, we will make it better. In the meantime, try clicking the "Filtering Options" and then select "Local Sales Only." That should make it much better for you.

When I click on Detroit I get stuff in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor......Ohio! To much to sort thru they should be in their correct headings. Especially since when you go back it doesn't go back to the sale you were looking at it goes back to the beginning of the list.

do not like the new format. used to be able to see almost everything on one page, now have to scroll on and on, and the speed is awful..not all of us have ipads, etc. or ever will. one more time, something that worked fine for me got wrecked..

Scratch that last comment about slowness - after poking around for 15-20 minutes, it is running well now.

Hi Walter: Thanks! Hi Mark: Yes, we're working on the site slowness, as it should be a lot quicker. I'll let the developers know about hovering over the pins for IE8 users and we'll get it taken care of as soon as we can.

I haven't had a chance to review the changes thoroughly, mainly because the site is not just slower than before, but excruciatingly slow. Also, the "hovering over the pins" feature that someone else mentioned doesn't work. I'm using IE8 - I know, not the latest and greatest browser, but a lot of people still use it.

Great Site, After viewing a particular sale from the list of sales, it returns to the beginning of the list rather than from the sale you were just viewing. Thanks!

Hi Judy: That's actually a setting within your internet browser. When you've clicked on a link, it will change color. I'm sorry, but that's not something we can control. However, with time, I'm sure you'll be able to view what sales have been clicked, and what hasn't. Glad you enjoy the new look!

Love the new look. Just one feature missing. Before the change, viewed sales turned a different color (from blue to pink). It made it easy to tell the difference between sales I've browsed and ones I haven't. Please put it back. Thx

Lovin' the changes! Looking forward to using this renovated/recycled/rejuvenated site in a few days. As a frequent estate saler ... I like that I can tell how many days a sale has been running. Yep, I'm one of those that often goes on the final day in hopes to find that awesome bargain :) Have a great week!

Hi Phil: If you hover over the pins, more information will be available (including access to the full sale description).

I dont like the fact that I can't click on the color coded pins on the map to look at that sale. I plan my day by visiting sales based on following predetermined route being careful not to backtrack or zigzag around. I dont care who is conducting the sale or what pictures they share. All I care about is the most efficient use of my time.
