In Paris in 1624, a pivotal event was Cardinal Richelieu being appointed as King Louis XIII's First Minister. This appointment began Richelieu's 18-year term, during which he began building his own residence, the Palais-Cardinal (now the Palais-Royal), and further developed the Louvre. Other significant happenings in or around Paris that year included a treaty with the Dutch, the establishment of the first French colony in North America, and the start of construction on Louis XIII's hunting lodge that would become Versailles.
