Iroquois Talking Earth Pottery Vase by Steve Smith STS 1993 Nature Turtle Eagle

Talking Earth pottery vase, signed on the underside STS and dated '93, with identification number 2-908. The artist is Steve T. Smith of the Turtle Clan of the Mohawk Nation, Haudenosaunee, and the Six Nation Reserve, Canada.

Sgraffito carved with a variety of slip colors, including white, beige and brown.

A paper scroll found inside the vase is signed by Steve T. Smith and dated 1993. It reads (with original misspellings):

"This is an original and contemporary piece of Iroquois pottery. The dotted rim shows the circle which symbolizes a sacred and continuous life cycle of renewal. The man and woman look toward nature to seek powers (attributes) that will strengthen their union. The ark for the life, health, growth and fertility of the woodland flowers. They ask for the longlivity of the turtle and the patience of the heron. The turtle and heron are clans. The ask for the strength, vision and guardianship of the eagle. The ask to be part of the laws and forces of nature as symbolized by the geometric designs (order)."

Stands 9 1/2" tall.

Good condition. No chips or cracks.

This is an exceptional piece of Canadian pottery.
