An antique oil painting titled "The Wooden Bridge". By Alexander Schilling (Chicago, 1859-1937).
Painting is on canvas with a period Eastlake black & gilt frame. Dated (18)77.

Style is correct for Schilling, signature "S" on front is consistent with the bold "S" he signed with on paintings, full name or not. Also the simple title of the work "The Wooden Bridge" is the norm for Schilling's works.

One old canvas repair (about 2"). Frame has normal wear to paint and gold. Overall size 38-1/2" W x 25-1/2" H.

Comments: An important but lesser-known Tonalist landscape painter. During the early 1880s, he and John Vanderpoel organized outdoor painting classes, going first to the Muskoka Lakes in Ontario, and later to the Juniata and Lebanon Valley in PA. By December, 1885 he had established his studio in NYC. WW25 lists his address as Leonia, NJ and spells his name as "Schilling;" however, he had already changed the Germanic spelling of his name with the advent of WWI.
