Ended Tabriz Pictorial Rug, North West Persia, Wool on Silk Foundation
Sold by Blue Moon Estate Sales
The polychrome field with a central standing female figure in flowing gowns with arm raised, supported by ibex, rabbits and other wildlife amongst dense flowering vines and plants, (framed).
The reverse knotting detail and style of design confirm this to be of the origin as stated in the Guarantee line. Tabriz is a historically important center for the production of decorative rugs displaying a wide repertoire of designs, based on a tradition dating back to the 16th Century. Pictorial rugs in varying styles of depiction feature highly in their repertoire. This rug is an example of a particular style of pictorial rug specific to Tabriz. This rather surreal mythical depiction is from a significant group of modern Tabriz weavings often referred to as 'fantasy' rugs where the depictions are dream-like in appearance. These rugs began to be created around the last quarter of the 20th Century and are particularly popular in Middle and Far Eastern markets.
