Ended Hamadan Rug, West Persia, Wool on Cotton Foundation
Sold by Blue Moon Estate Sales
The red field with a central blue and ivory stepped floral medallion, linked to mirrored shield pendants, supported by all over Herati, blue spandrels enclosing angular vines issuing flower heads, an olive green border enclosing stylised flora forms.
The style of design confirms this to be of the origin as stated in the Guarantee Line. The Hamadan district comprises around one hundred and fifty towns and villages producing rugs of similar construction though with a broad range of patterns and designs inspired or based upon tribal traditions or formal urban designs. This rug displays inspiration from both traditions. The presence of a medallion format is typically from a Persian urban workshop tradition. The pattern details display stylised flora and sometimes fauna forms drawn geometrically with motifs verging on totemic in appearance are from nomadic tribal roots. The colours are from a traditional Hamadan palette, the tones of which indicate that this rug was made around the date as suggested.
